Best headphones for producing, not DJing?

Hey guys-

So, long story short, I am NOT working in the music industry as of now... but really am getting into producing music (primarily dubstep) in my free time. I realize that there are posts on here about the "best headphones" to buy if you are truly doing this all-out, but the truth is that I am a beginner producer and am looking for more bang-for-the-buck than the absolute-dominant headphones. My main problem is that I am living in an apartment with roommates and I can't be playing music out of my speakers when I get home from work late at night -- however, my current headphones just aren't good enough in letting me hear all the frequencies and whatnot.

Long story short, I need some headphones that you think are really good... nothing that you'd consider "industry best" (unless they are affordable). What headphones can I buy that are pretty affordable but would still give me good sound quality so that I can listen to & critique dubstep/electro in production?

i'm currently using a pair of akg k99's, good starting pair in my opinion, ive never had an issue or complaint about the response they provide. great freq. range 18hz-22khz i believe, pretty flat response as far as i can tell, and costs around $100. by no means would these be considered industry standard, but great product for the price.

Thanks guys. I've looked into beats audio before actually... Heard they are good but I feel like you are going to be overpaying because they are endorsed by dr. Dre. At any rate, ill definitely look further into that and will take a hard look at the k99s.

Keep those suggestions coming if you have em, really appreciate your help.

First of all, Shure SRH440, Sennheiser HD280 Pro, or AKG K240 are my suggestions. DO NOT GET BEATS BY DRE.

i've got audio technica ath-m50s, which are really nice. comfortable, too. amazon sellers usually have them for anywhere between $120 and $150ish, so they might be a bit more than you intended to spend. but they're great.

I own the AKG k240's and they're fucking great.
Got them for 900 swedish crowns, which is almost 135 $ I think. Think they're pretty cheap for the quality you get, they cover every frequency you'll need and the response is very flat!

I have Sennheiser HD280Pros. They arent really optimal for producing cause theyre closed-back but I liked that because I do a little bit of DJ'ing too.

I LOVE THESE HEADPHONES!

im sorry but these headphones are NOT suitable for production. one can produce good shit with them, as for any pair of headphones (some people just amaze me). But these are by no means suitable or respectable monitoring headphones.

they lie a LOT. they are not accurate.

For a little less money, u could ebay shit up and pick up a pair of 750 pro from Ultrasone, which are really good studio headphones (fell in love with these after a LONG search) and get a true representation of whats going on inside ur daw, especially in the low register.

id say Sennheiser is as reliable as ultrasone in the same price range.

but most people would not believe it because they dont have something like sony written on them.

again, sorry to sound so direct, but beats by dre are made by monster, ugly shit really. scary shit. and they are WAY overpriced.
