hey, thought all the producers would be interested in hearing my live PA experiment i did today. its not fully polished, but its live, and it was fun!

yeah dude, the red one and the blue one... both of the ones with tubes. the 'verb sucks on them (or it kicks ass, depends of whether you like crap verb... i kinda do

) but other than that, their very capable machines! especially if you use them in tandem... 5 synth parts, 18 drum/sample parts, 2 timestretching parts, 2 melodic sample parts, up to 6 effects routed anyway you want (3 per unit), a sample slicer that can play individual slices... nice, full stereo action!

i plan on getting a LOT more into this... i like it! it blurs the lines between DJing and producing

yeah i do like 'em! when i first got them, i was kinda frustrated, because they felt kind of limited, but the more i work with them, the better, and more creative, i get.

fun is the perfect word to describe them... i have genuine fun when im making stuff on them

their so hands on too!

i messed around with those a couple of times before they started putting tubes in them. do the tubes make a big difference? or at least a noticable one?

i hated the way korg does step sequencing. im much more of a roland person.

the tubes make quite a difference, actually. they sound warm... and very full. theres a knob on the emx labeled "drive" that allows you to push just one synth part (up to 5 parts) through the tubes. you can really get some dirrrrrty sounds out of that thing if you want to!

man i have had an emx1 sitting here collecting dust for awhile now.
how much did you use the sampler compared to the other?
like sampling for melody, and using the mx for drums?

i use the ESX as much as the EMX generally marsyas. what i do is hook them up via midi, with the esx as the master, and the emx as the slave. i take stuff that i've made before hand and layer it together between the two. i dont think it would be possible to do this with just one box, as you couldnt have the smooth transitions (i.e. instantly switching from one track to the next...).

im gonna start with these, and if it takes off, i'd like to invest in something else, like maybe an mpc or something... the esx only has 256 seconds of mono sample time... which is halved for anything stereo you do... it adds up fast

but i like working within the limitations too!

Misk, this sounds really cool. Such a small amount of gear, too - which means you could probably work a live set into a DJ set! If I could ask a couple of questions... what parts of the music are you altering in real-time vs. playing stuff that you programmed beforehand? Does each 'song' have a set length or can you sit in a groove for a while if the dancefloor's feeling it? And do you ever have to take one electribe out of the mix to load new sequences, sounds, etc? You've got a DJ mixer between the two boxes, right?

I'm inspired - going to try putting some live stuff together myself.

yeah i wanted to get at you about this, since we've talked about this in the past, but i've been busy i guess

as far as what i do, its mostly preprogrammed midi 'loops' that i've made that will run for an indeterminate amount of time. I have both electribes midi sync'd, one as the master, and one as the slave. im mostly muting and soloing parts, as well as transposing melodies, but i also can improvise if i want to... there a little improvisation in this set, but as i get better i'll be doing more of this (more like, as i get more confident!).

another thing, im also tweaking knobs, adding effects and stuff too, not just pressing play

That makes sense - running multitrack loops that you can 'dub out'. I didn't mean to imply that you were just hitting play, by the way .

I've been trying to work this kind of improvisation into my 'produced' tunes, manipulating levels, filters and FX in real time while mixing down a pre-arranged sequence. What I find most challenging is keeping the levels consistent while you're doing that... your stuff sounds great in that respect, really consistent and even levels. I'm looking forward to hearing more of this!
