Was sampling yesterday
Drumkit, golf balls, ride on lawnmower, circular saw and a fuckin didgeridoo. Recorded using the focusrite saffire and a singstar mic (lol, was surprisingly good quality with little background noise).
Can't wait to get stuck in and make something cool with em.
Do you guys ever sample stuff? If so, do you have a field recorder or anything like it, or do you use the same technique as I have?

Re: Was sampling yesterday
Probably every day, though I don't do field recordings as much as I'd like to. It's mainly grabbing random things off CDs/DVDs/various sources and then throwing them into Audacity.

						Re: Was sampling yesterday
i made the sickest growl bass ever out of a kickdrum yesterday, and my submission for the 48hr contest has a snaredrum that's a recording of me smashing an iceblock last winter.
i'd love to do more field recording but summer's not the time to do it. more people on the streets at night and fucking birds everywhere.
be sure to put your recordings in some sort of granular sampler (alchemy ftw) and fuck around with the settings, it's pure bliss. makes you feel like amon tobin

Re: Was sampling yesterday
Next purchase on the list is a decent field recorder. I'd tried buying a cheapo minidisc recorder off eBay and taking that out with a boom mic but that didn't work out too wellhasezwei wrote:i'd love to do more field recording but summer's not the time to do it. more people on the streets at night and fucking birds everywhere.
Is there a freeware equivavlent of alchemy that's worth a gander?hasezwei wrote:be sure to put your recordings in some sort of granular sampler (alchemy ftw) and fuck around with the settings, it's pure bliss. makes you feel like amon tobin

i'm using a zoom h1 with a foam windshield that doesn't fit, so i have to wrap a shoelace around it, propa ghettowub wrote:Next purchase on the list is a decent field recorder. as for alchemy, not that i know of... there's the alchemy player but that just plays presets and that's missing the point entirely. what i like about alchemy are some of the filters that are just great and the granular engine. i'm also going to get more into that remix pad at some point in the future for some nasty reese-morphing bizzniz.
so the bottom line is: it's worth every penny.
Re: Was sampling yesterday
Yeahh Alchemy is insane, been working with it yesterday again after getting me my new computer. Next thing will be my new Full-HD video camera and then a field recorder!

I made a LOT of binaural recordings the past few months, mostly of household/toolshed items. I'm building a binaural sample library with these. I gave away the first batch of recordings, try a search on here if interested.
Planning to do more outside recordings at some point, but need to build a windscreen for the mics first. Already made a furry windscreen for my H1, works like a charm, at least 500% better than the crappy foam one which came with it.

Re: Was sampling yesterday
I work in a machine shop, so every once in a while i'll run around and bang on shit and record it with my phone.

						Re: Was sampling yesterday
I use my mobile phone to record sounds whenever I come across something cool. "Can you drop that again for me the same sort of way"

Re: Was sampling yesterday
I'm getting myself a sampler next week. I seriously can't wait to hit things around my house and go out alone and get some decent samples.
Any decent ones to recommend?

Re: Was sampling yesterday
I'm really tempted to take my laptop into work and using it to record a big outer box of kleenex hitting the ground. Would make a kickass kick.
Might look at field recorders tho.

Played around with the grains of some water sample, sort of like a rushing river or something.
After taking pieces I liked I then imported them into a WIP. With just a little bit of processing and EQing I layered them with my sub and a touch of midrange and got some nasty sounds.
It's pretty funny when people ask "how did you make that sound?" and you tell them that a river sample was the basis

Re: Was sampling yesterday
I usually sample with onboard mics of whatever computer I have with me at the time, but the quality is pretty bad. So I've been using some headphones as microphones -- works surprisingly well, actually.

I'm planning on buying a field recorder soon. I hear things on a daily basis that I could incorporate into tunes.

just ordered the h1 the other day, can't wait to do some creative sampling. was wondering what you thought of yours? didn't have much to go off of in terms of comparison to other field recorders, but it seemed a pretty bang for the buckhasezwei wrote:i'm using a zoom h1 with a foam windshield that doesn't fit, so i have to wrap a shoelace around it, propa ghetto![]()

Re: Was sampling yesterday
it's nice really. if you use it outside you'll pick up lots of ambient noise so you're probably going to have to highpass your recordings and generally isolate sounds with careful eq'ing but it's still the best mic i've used so far. however you REALLY should buy a windshield for it, and there are some issues when recording portable like when you hold it in your hands you get handling noises and there's phasing if you don't hold it really still.drooka wrote:just ordered the h1 the other day, can't wait to do some creative sampling. was wondering what you thought of yours? didn't have much to go off of in terms of comparison to other field recorders, but it seemed a pretty bang for the buckhasezwei wrote:i'm using a zoom h1 with a foam windshield that doesn't fit, so i have to wrap a shoelace around it, propa ghetto![]()

it's still bang for the buck though don't get me wrong, and i never had serious problems with the above issues. you just have to get used to them
