A New Way To Make Money As A Musician
A Friend and I have been developing a website. The fundamental concept is this; as an artists you can create an account, upload your music and offer it for free download (mp3), and get paid for your views. Musicians earn %50 of the advertisement money made from their page. This is only the first step. Much more is still in development. We are going to replace the download button with a "Pay What You Like" button so that there is no resistance for fans who want to support their favorite artists. We will also be adding new revenue streams for promoters as well.
The website is http://www.FOLrecords.com
First Online Label
A lot of websites out there claim to be the "first", and they generally do not execute the concept they promote. Our website can be called the "first" because we are actually fulfilling the role of a label with income, promotion, and support. Most "online labels" offer a very watered down version of the concept. Keep in mind the website only offers one feature as of now, the main infrastructure is still under development.
Any questions please ask away!

Thanks, bSquared08. We have put a lot of thought into the execution of this concept. There is so much functionality still in development to be added, and we have a plan. As of now we are not even in phase one!bSQUARED08 wrote:That's a very cool idea on paper. I'd love to see it executed successfully
Here is an example of one of our future services:
Right now we only have artist accounts. People will be able to create a fan account as well. With a fan account, a user is able to get a unique link and embed code for any song on FOLrecords.com. If the fan brings the artist a page view, then the fan gets paid 50% of what the artist was paid for the view. If someone uses the fans embedded player to purchase the song using our "Pay What You Like" Feature, then they will also get a cut of that. This also creates new revenue streams for promoters.

Can you elucidate upon your motivation Jules?
To help producers make a living,
create a profitable business,
offer a service,
innovate,
sit on your arse & exploit others to make money.
?
Honestly...
and what are your principals as regards advertising?

Re: A New Way To Make Money As A Musician
There are quite a few things we would like to accomplish with this. For one, we want to create a natural balance in music realm. For decades the media corps have had control of almost everything. When the internet came about and file sharing began, they lost control of their music. With our system, we embrace the internet and put the power is in entirely in the hands of artists, promoters, and fans. Fans will be supporting music that they like, while promoters will promote music the fans are supporting. It is entirely one level. Everyone has equal opportunitysd5 wrote:Can you elucidate upon your motivation Jules?

That would lead to people spamming there player about in order to earn money, i'd leave that bit out of the plan.
Also the name isn't really catchy or make much sense IMO
Looks like a good idea though!

Thanks! The idea is still more of a concept then a reality. We have a lot of development, operating costs, and fine tuning to take care of before we can refine ratios for maximum user profit.fractal wrote:good idea really although I would probably mess with the ratio a bit

The only way for an artist or promoter to earn money from our embeddable player is if a fan decides to use the "Pay What You Like" option. Spamming would occur more if an artist was paid for every play on their player. I dont think it would be spammed anymore then people spam their soundcloud players.
And about the name.. I agree. We are getting our idea out as fast as we can and will refine everything as we gain the resources to do so.
Re: A New Way To Make Money As A Musician
Good luck with your project,
My advice at the moment:
Change the name to something simple and catchy
Refine the website interface so it is very simple and good looking
Stay away from words like "Lame" or "Cool" and have "Like" or "Dislike"
Make it compulsory to have artists upload artwork so you dont have loads of "FOL artist" images everywhere
etc etc
But I'm sure you're already working on all of this, I can see it's in its infancy
Good luck again...

Thank you sir, and we are working on everything you said!
For example, we are changing "cool" and "lame" to "hit" and "quit". This is a quick fix, the others are a bit more in depth

What stops people uploading the work of others and earning a few quid or whatever?

Very cool idea.
one thing though, on the home page when I'm trying to read the second banner it darts over to the third one before I can finish reading it. not sure if this is a problem with my browser or what, but just thought i'd say something.
good luck with this!
