ive been using the demo version on and off for the last month
cant save a sausage

on the demo version.
what vst should i use etc etc?

Part of the fun is experimenting with different instruments and finding out which ones you like!
There are plenty of threads about which VST's people use. There are so many good free ones you should be busy for a longgg fucking time. Download a bunch, try them out, keep and use the good ones and delete the shit ones so they don't clutter things up.
