Doesn't it annoy you when....

Post by ScatterbrainMusic » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:09 pm

People criticize someone who wants to get signed, by saying things such as "You should produce only for the love" "You'll start to hate making music when it becomes a job" "Don't go mainstream" etc.

Although I'm not signed myself so can't vouch for it being a land of gorgeous women and michelin star quality food, I think it's the hallmark of a bitter producer when I hear someone say some of the things that I have mentioned above.

I'll be honest, when someone who has been producing for a few months starts posting about how they want to get signed, it is annoying, purely because of the fact that they're getting ahead of themselves, they're impatient and the quality of the music should always come first and foremost.

But if you do indeed concentrate on the quality and endeavor to better your production consistently, do you not think getting signed or getting paid for your music is a decent signpost of success? The aim for me is to be signed, promoting my music, doing shows etc, completely unashamedly, but I don't believe that takes away my love for production or affects the way I make music.

for me, getting tracks signed is more about getting taken more seriously as a producer and getting a bit more recognition. I don't care about the money at this stage as it's still only a hobby really

EDIT: Unless you're making ''sick'' beats for Cher Lloyd or Brit-Brit then its unlikely you'll be making much money even if you do get signed.

I can't really argue with the advice given, that's too true. It's food for thought though, if more people tried harder to get their music out there, there would be a much healthier music scene.

You could argue perhaps that it would lead to the oversaturation of shit tunes, but with stringent record labels, it would be easier for everyone to find music that they liked quicker.

You're obviously making music for the wrong reasons.

i don't care if someone hates their tunes and is just doing it for money. if i like it, i'll listen to it. if i like it enough, i'll buy it, simple.
its too complicated to try to draw lines in the sand like that. and the industry is too fucked up. just gotta roll with it, keep supporting the stuff you like to hear.

I don't think so at all, I like and at times love the music I make. I just want to be ambitious about it.

It sounds like you crave acceptance and affirmation for the decisions you have made. Having ambition doesn't mean you HAVE to get signed. Just be happy with what you're doing, and always strive to improve your productions. Anything that happens along the path of self improvement should be taken as an added bonus.

I don't think I'm quite as zen as you, that's certainly a formula for happiness though.

Wait, woah. Where did you hear that, haha? That's really poetic and serene.

Yeah that's fine Scatter, I was only checking. As long as you have a goal and a firm path you want to follow with music, then I hope you arrive at your destination. Good luck with that! Wanting to be successful and well known isn't a bad request, it shouldn't be frowned upon for wanting success -- It's just a natural human affliction. Just don't worry about what anyone else thinks, just do yo' thang.

mate too answer your question, yea it is annoying but as this forum proves, dubstep is rammed with absolute bitter, resentful pricks these days, that will do/ say anything to put you down. ive never known a genre with as much hate. Its the attitude problem that i believe has a certain percentage to do with its future failings. i mean look at the way wub responded too ya, could have been a little more polite and he helps run the joint!
Try not let them bother ya buddy, what they think makes zero difference

good luck ;-)

its funny that youre making the exact same point as wub made

OT: Music is all about individuality and expression, do what works for you. If ambition can drive you to produce tunes that are good and that you enjoy then you should definitely use that to your advantage.

Just make sure you have some fun along the way too because that's what music is all about.

I have a few reasons why i make music: 1. Because its my passion
2. Because I like making tunes i want to hear
3. Because I want to make tunes OTHER people want to hear.

the third one, to me is very important. I want to make an impact on the scene with my tunes. I want to be big enough that people will hear me. Getting signed is really how that is done. Not many people are hearing my tunes, as i only have 60 soundcloud followers and no other people really hear them. Being represented by a label gets your tunes out to more people than you ever could alone, and when a lot of people hear my tune and talk about it and like it and whatnot, thats a pretty satisfying feeling IMO.

i guess it all matters what your motive is in music.
