Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
My 2 cents on the price to get in / line up etc.
As I stated before in the thread, whether or not the awards will or won't celebrate the full cycle is really only to be seen on the night. I'm sure the promoters are hoping they've given every artist a fair chance to win by having open voting. Now the only thing that stands between the people so loved on this forum and their award you guys hope they'll win is the process of voting. If you guys are so sure youngsta or dmz won't win anything why don't you vote and see what happens?
Obviously with this format of voting, its more likely that the artist with the most twitter / facebook followers who up a link to the voting site are more likely to win. But this forum collectively has 60,000 members. Of which I'd estimate there are approximately 6 to 10,000 users who check at least once every couple of weeks. Thats a lot of votes.
Regardless of what happens though, these awards are bound to be rubbished by everyone anyhow - Mala picks up best producer and half of the internet is up in arms because skrillex didn't win. Yet Skrillex wins and the other half is up in arms cos Mala didn't win. In a scene like ours, the word Dubstep means something different to everyone now.
Its real difficult, but fair play to the promoters for going ahead with it. It adds something nice to an already big event.
Now, onto pricing.
A lot of you who don't promote nights may not know how some lineups come to be so big, all for a fiver to get in. Majority of these nights are either so big that the artists playing them know how good it is to be on these lineups, and they are friends (or perhaps nowadays) fans of the promoters. These events may be a part of dubstep folklore. From day one a lot of these events have run on the basis of "if we do well on the night you'll all be paid an equal share". And some still do to this day. Some DJ's and artists still do favours for their mates of ten years plus and are still happy to play for them at a reduced rate.
The promoters of this party have gone thru agents and done everything with contracts paying full fees etc. I can't even begin to imagine the combined amount they've shelled out in total for the lineup they've released. But I'm pretty sure it's got to be the highest paid lineup I've seen on one night in the UK outside of festivals. So to say they're putting their balls on the line would be an understatement.
Fair play to the promoters. Whether you agree with the awards or not, they're gonna be in for a lot of stick from all corners whatever happens, and financially have gone all out to put this on for people.
I'm sure they'll pull all the stops out on the night to make sure the event runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all who've paid their money to hear the artists they've booked.
And whilst I am playing in room 2, the fact that I've been around from the start doesn't mean i'm necessarily automatically due a headline slot. I can accept that in the current scheme of things, names like doctor p and flux pavilion are going to draw a bigger crowd than I can right now. Whether people on this forum can respect or fathom that is their decision, but at the business end of the dubstep scene, its something you have to accept and respect. Flux and Doctor P have worked hard to get where they are right now, just as I did back in the early days. Sonically it makes more sense to have certain styles in different arenas on the night too, and with that sound being more popular than the more traditional dubstep, it makes sense to put them in a larger room. If you don't like that sound, fair enough - come join us in room 2.
I like when promoters put different styles on one night so i'm going to be hopping from room to room to see whats going on in each arena. I'm not expecting to pick up any awards on the night but I'll be checking the ceremony in the main room too. I've got my bets on for each category!
Big up.

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
Fair enough bro. I still find the room slots problematic as it sends out politics of its own, to a majority of kids that might actually think that doctor p, were around from day one. Historically, the three of you should be headliners, regardless of current popularity. Anyway, respect your take on it. Bigup!

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
@Seckle yeah man its a tough one but to be honest, i think its got to the point now where the majority of people listening don't realise and don't actually really care what was around before now. If you try to show them, the sound is so different they can't even listen to music from 2003 and begin to make sense of it when they compare it to a lot of the stuff they listen to now. Trust me I tried to show one guy at an all ages gig in San Bernadino about Benny Ill, he couldn't understand how it has anything to do with dubstep - I was there in front of him saying "This is where it all started" and he was looking at me like I was taking the piss out of him!!
I'm not gonna let it bother me. I know the people who are into what I'm doing don't mind, and as long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing still it's all good.

Paul Oakenfold styles, play a set off a CD and twiddle knobs to make it look like your mixing.
Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
Best "DJing" I've seen was on some live performance of some generic pop singer, had some guy in the background with 2 CDJ's, no mixer, constantly bopping up and down, CDJ's weren't even turned on, and every few seconds he'd look at the camera and spin the CDJ's in a random direction.
Classic.

Some "RnB" style mixed race fairly young girl I think, possibly in the charts now. If I can remember her name, I'll try and find the vid.
