It all depends where you come from. It's pretty much seen as a necessity for teenagers to have mobile phones these days. "I'll get bullied if I have a shit phone" "There might be paedophiles around" "You need to be able to call me"... a lot of parents treat giving their kids a Blackberry the same as they would stocking the freezer... in fact, a lot would pay the BB bill before sorting out dinner... the kids will eat on the street anyway.
Yeah, they're not deprived on the scale of Somalia or something, but they are forced to mingle every single day with the rich and comfortable. They see billboards for "happiness" that they can't afford every time they leave their house. People wandering around with good jobs, nice clothes, fast cars... all the things that society says you need in order to be worthwhile as a human being... all things that they have absolutely no route to without committing crime... or debasing themselves.
It's not about famine, it's about disenfranchisement. The rioters in LA in 1992 weren't starving either... they were violently angry with a system that systematically kicked them down... kept them
alive but unhappy and spat upon by the "good people".
I notice that everyone's being very careful about using the word Chav... this is a
very sensible thing.
