Have to agree with this sentiment. I think there HAS to be a point where a person simply has enough? I haven't even mentioned tax avoidance but christ some people in the world are just really taking the piss in a way that has to stop.
Noone needs several million pounds. Fucking noone. Not one person needs several million pounds to survive. Yet we have billionaires all over the world who are currently not reinvesting ANY of their money and they want MORE tax breaks? There should be a law where once you have over a certain amount of money you HAVE to do good stuff with it. Otherwise what is the point of growing economies, if not to give everyone a bit more?
There has to be a point where enough is enough imo.
Anyway, better get this back on topic, sorry bout the mini rant.

Quite liked Boris' speech there, given he got destroyed earlier.

 Boris gets cheers as long as he sticks to places like Clapham,he'll probably be heading to Ealing next.....doesn't do so well in places like Peckham and Brixton!

Such a sad state of affairs when this kinda shit happens on your door step, nothing ever happens here apart from a couple of stabbings/shootings a year then boom - we're one of the main places hit last night.

EDIT: Some pictures.

In the long run I am genuinely concerned about the effect this will have on civil liberties, after the Tories are done ignoring any root social causes and blaming it all on mindless thuggery.

There is no way to justify what has been done so far, but there are fundamental problems in society (and the supposed values we live by) that contribute and act as a catalyst: trying to understand the reasons behind what is happening is not the same as sympathising with those involved in perpetrating it. You cannot solve underlying social problems simply by putting people in jail. Although that no doubt needs to happen.

It all depends where you come from. It's pretty much seen as a necessity for teenagers to have mobile phones these days. "I'll get bullied if I have a shit phone" "There might be paedophiles around" "You need to be able to call me"... a lot of parents treat giving their kids a Blackberry the same as they would stocking the freezer... in fact, a lot would pay the BB bill before sorting out dinner... the kids will eat on the street anyway.

Yeah, they're not deprived on the scale of Somalia or something, but they are forced to mingle every single day with the rich and comfortable. They see billboards for "happiness" that they can't afford every time they leave their house. People wandering around with good jobs, nice clothes, fast cars... all the things that society says you need in order to be worthwhile as a human being... all things that they have absolutely no route to without committing crime... or debasing themselves.

It's not about famine, it's about disenfranchisement. The rioters in LA in 1992 weren't starving either... they were violently angry with a system that systematically kicked them down... kept them alive but unhappy and spat upon by the "good people".

I notice that everyone's being very careful about using the word Chav... this is a very sensible thing.
LA riots were about civil rights, racism, and an area that was literally a war zone at the time. Not being pissed because they can't afford what the next man has. It was about being pissed because they couldn't even go to apply for a job in the white part of town because odds were they'd get pulled over for being black in a white part of town, likely beaten, often killed, and taken to jail for no reason.

coz you're fucking clueless.

you don't end up with all the money you want just from working hard. People with the kind of money you're talking about are fucking crooks.

I'm pursuing a doctorate right now in a field i enjoy. I can work as hard as i want; if i don't con people, if i don't engage in unethical business practices, i'm never going to make more than $100,000 in a year. i honestly doubt if i'll ever make it past 75k.

Cadburry & Rowantree ?????? you're trying to promote a really ignorant and dangerous worldview, son. so shut the FUCK up.
Not sure what field you're studying nor what country you're in (but I'd guess US since you used $ and "son"). PhD mate of mine went over to the states over five years ago to earn $90k straight off the bat. She's well above that now. Unlike Europe, the US actually pays technical PhDs a decent wage if they're good.

I have a PhD too. I don't earn craploads of money but I'm comfortable. I worked my arse off my entire life to get 2 scholarships. So I think some of your assertions are wrong.

Have to agree with this sentiment. I think there HAS to be a point where a person simply has enough? I haven't even mentioned tax avoidance but christ some people in the world are just really taking the piss in a way that has to stop.

i agree that some people have too much.... but you have to realize as an adult that you're never going to have everything you want. Unless you're bill gates there are some things that will always be out of reach.

Doing with just what you need and only some of your wants is a reasonable expectation in life.

Being mad because bill gates can have a gold plated x-box and you don't isn't because there is some great injustice in the world. It's the fact no one needs a gold plated x-box including you so you should stop feeling that you're entitled to it just because bill gates has one.

Mate I agree with you 100%. But when you start replacing "gold plated xbox" with "functioning family" "cushy enjoyable upbringing" "respect" and "education", things can start to get ugly.

I'm wasn't saying they were (and I certainly wasn't saying this is worse or even on the same scale as LA, so calm down). I'm saying that the LA problems were the result of a disenfranchised population, the same as this is. This isn't caused by a new telly or phone coming out and everyone wanting it... it's caused by decades of neglect in the poorest areas of London.. neglect combined with outrageous spending by the rest of society.

No riot is identical, but a lot have a great deal in common... you have to have a certain set of conditions for a riot to be on the cards in the first place. If income was more fairly distributed in London, the anger simply wouldn't exist to have a riot. The poorest areas of London have been a tinderbox for some time... a spark was all it took.

I just went out to try and find a shop open, seemed pretty empty really!

Just couples of people walking home and a couple of yoot trying to chat up girls in the local park.

Then again, I live at the top - not the bottom (Where all the shops are)

Oh, good; the racists have found a marketing opportunity in amongst a city's disaster. I'm sure they'll really be acting sensibly, too.
