new DAW, cpu whine!

Post by VirtualMark » Wed Aug 10, 2011 10:54 am

hey, just bought an i7 beast, 8gb ram, oc'd to 5ghz, ssd drive etc. its sweet, but theres a high pitched sound coming from my monitors now. i'm using krk rokit 8's and an NI audio 2 dj sound card. i can't hear the whine if i plug the card into my laptop, and i also can't hear it if i plug headphones into the card when its on the new pc. the noise doesn't show up on cubase with a spectrum analyser either, which suggests its some noise getting the usb somehow.

any ideas? :6:

Have you checked your TCP/IP settings?

its not connected to the web at all, and all the network services are disabled. i just wanted it for audio, ironically thats the only thing i'm having problems with. as soon as it turns on, the high pitched noise starts, before windows has even started to load.

sounds like interference on your cables going to your monitors.

Are they clsoe to the pc case or power supply? if you plug headphones in to the same NI interface and didnt hear the whine then its probably getting picked up after NI soundcard outputs to the inputs on your monitors. Maybe try wrapping tin foil around the cable going to your monitor and see if you can get it to stop or lessen the buzz/hum/noise, then if thats the prob buy some shielded cables to replace your current ones. Maybe turning the overclocking down a bit and see if that helps/alters the whine.

You should probably sample the whine and make some synths/risers/drum hits out of it though just to make this worht your time of troubleshooting it.

i have sorted it! i earthed the cable going from the soundcard to the monitors. i don't know if its correct but the whine disappeared completely. i bought a new lead and am now using just one trs cable that splits into two mono cables. before i was using the lead that came with it, 3.5in jack split into 2 rca's.

strange that earthing the lead to the case should clear it up, i'd rather find the cause of the noise but at least the whine has stopped.

Just wondering, how is the processor speed of the i7's ? Have you noticed a big difference?

they're fast as anything mate, i benchmarked it and its 8x as quick as my 2.5ghz dual core laptop(penryn core2duo). This is under ideal conditions, i don't know how well various software scales over all cores. The i7 is a quad core but shows up as 8 cores due to hyperthreading, i've not even come close to 20% usage yet. They also overclock really nicely, i've had it running at 5ghz with no problems, but i've turned it down to 4.5 ghz now, as at this speed the system is totally silent under full load!

so to answer your question, i'd say its more power than i'll need for a while. but thats good, as newer more demanding synths come out i'll eventually find out its limits. Or i could just whack 20+ bitcrushers on each channel
