before i give some advice id just like to say, im a bedroom producer like all of you guys, ive only been doing this for maybe 6 or 7 years and im definitely not a professional, so take anything i say with a grain of salt, and realize that this is just an amateur's opinion.
@jrisreal - the dnb track you posted is okay, you're definitely right theres some mixing stuff that needs to happen, mostly the bass is WAY too loud and everything else is too quiet. besides that its a cool idea, the bassline doesn't really sound natural at all, it sounds like it was copy pasted and edited around, not like a single flowing entity that freaks your ears out.. maybe add some FX to kind of smooth it?? crossfading samples is really easy with kontakt and/or battery
@sera1 - like the trancey part, but the actual drop is not super exciting. the bass sounds are pretty cool but they dont meld together 100 percent, and some of the lower gurgly ones sound a little too dirty like they're muckin up yr mix. dont be afraid to carve out huge chunks with your EQ man! it might sound weak/thin on its own but in the context of the mix itll make everything huge
@kidstrange it all sounds pretty good, although it sounds pretty quiet for how big the waveform is. sounds like it was a lot of fun to make, not my thing at all and i would probably not ever listen to it, but its very cool, lots of elaborate instrumentation, most of it sounds good together, but i would choose a different kick, more of like a low 808 type thud, prolly plenty of low pass on it, so that it leaves some more room for all the air in your track to come out, you know? you've built a really good atmosphere so let it breathe! also slap a compressor on that snare and get it to crack through the mix, all the drums could be turned up 5 or 6 db easily im thinking. keep doing your thing man there's a lot of people who are loving this sound right now and i could def see this track connecting with them
@projekt - hold on is cool, effective use of the vocal samples, the beat is 100 percent garage, i didnt listen to all of it because im not into that style a whole lot, but i wouldn't be surprised to hear a dj at a more "lite-step" night playing a track like this or changes. nice mixing, everything gels really good! i think the mix could be cranked quite a bit though, and could definitely take some squashing with a comp/limiter to get it really pumping and rolling
@hoborg - man your whole mix just lacks definition, there's a lot of empty spaces and a lot of freqs that could be emphasized to really get it cracking you know? are you resampling your basses? process them more to get a really thick wobble that catches your attention. here's what somebody taught me about effects: use a little bit, a lot of the time. a little tiny bit of distortion here, maybe even barely noticeable, a little tiny bit of saturation, some phaser, and on and on and on. this keeps it sounding clean and defined while still giving it a raw edge and a unique sound (nobody else will have the same fx chain as you i promise that!)
@awfulhabitz - check out the advice i gave hoborg on the distortion and resampling. also its wayyyy too dry of a mix! put some reverb and even some little delays on there. the bassline itself could use some automation to make it more lively/organic/mindfucking/raw. also, for deceased, everything is a little too squashed without making it any louder, im guessing you used a limiter on the master chain and just kind of tore into it?? back down on it some, if you want a louder mix then take your time and compress each hit individually and make sure everything has a space. then when you slam it on the master itll bring out all the crispness/fullness of your tune
Soundcloud
i usually make power electronics but got back into dubstep recently (i have no dubstep soundcloud only this PE one) and have started belting out some tracks (with blunt in hand forever god bless the USA). let me know what you guys think of it, this one is far from finished, but i liked the bassline a lot. tons of fun to make
