Creating basses?

Post by davidvandijcke » Mon Aug 15, 2011 2:08 pm

I'm learning how to use cubase and massive, but i'm really stuck creating basses. Can someone help me out? I'd like to know how to create a bass as in Jack Sparrow - Copland, or Sleeper - Submerged. So not like al the Skrillex/Datsik shit that's on youtube..

Cheers!

What DAW do you use?
Ledge had a great tutorial which will provide a great starting point in creating darker basslines.

If you don't use FL, everything done is easily applicable to Massive, or whatever synth you choose. If you use Reason, there are tons of great tutorials on Reese and dark basslines on YouTube, as well as Boy In A Band's Dark D&B, Dirty Dubstep, and Bassline tutorials.

quick simple dark sounds.

saw wave - distort slightly - add slight reverb/unison (detune)/chorus - automate frequency filter to raise from 0% - 20% (or how ever much you want)

voila.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

- Saw wave, play a chord, minor
- add some drive distortion and reverb
- low pass
- more reverb and distortion
- long attack decay and release times

instant dungeon sound
<keep it heavy>

Chords in bass frequencies usually result in some rather nasty side-effects. And most basses I would have thought are usually done in mono, and legato? That prevents chords from being used.
