Working with subs

So I mostly work with a pair of studio headphones when producing, and it works fine and has a good freq response 45hz-20khz.
I also use a household stereo to reference my work to seeing how it sounds on large speakers. When creating a sub would I be better off using the stereo (which has a subwoof) or headphones. Keeping in mind that though the headphones provide a clearer signal and has a freq response to the sub, I can't hear it to well unless I put its channel level at like -10db which when put to my reference stereo is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too high. Everything else going from headphones to stereo comes out exactly as heard on my headphones. It is only the sub frequencies that I have problems with

Sorry, I'll clarify, on re-reading it, it sounds a bit fuzzy. Would I be better off mixing just the sub on the stereo since the headphones can't seem to output the power I need to hear it properly. I would continue to mix the upper frequency stuff on the headphones as that is no problem.

Find the relationship between both the systems.

If its to loud on one, turn it down till it sounds good enough on both.

combo of both plus any other speakers you've got laying around your house/car etc.
when actually creating the sub id use whatever youre more familiar with keeping in mind that it will be louder on your stereo than headphones and vice versa, but as far as getting the levels of it right in the mix, you have to check your tune out on as many systems as possible in order to eliminate any boosts/cuts from your system messing with your mix

It also has to be said that subs are not harmonic so you can pretty much judge where it should be after a while.

from what i've heard the rp8's have big bass repsonse as it is and, as far as i understand, unless you have a sound treated room, using a sub in your monitoring set up can actually cause some difficulties get true response from the lows, but don't quote me.

for the monitors themselves, i've read that the lows tend to be a little overpowering on the larger rokits and the highs aren't as true as they could be, but for the price people seem to like them.
keep in mind i have no experience with these monitors, so you might want to read through the monitor thread in the bible and see whats been said about them there.

the highs sound incredible but there isn't a lot of low end compared to other 8" monitors I've heard

Use your headphones. 1. they are what you are used too. 2. HIFI stereos are just retarded because they are dirty power, very skewed freq. response and exxagerated eq's that you usually cannot bipass. I only use HIFI for general finished sampling of tracks and even then i wouldnt go and mess witha mix just because a hifi (with super dumb eq settings) made my bass sound one way or another. If you build the sub properly and its sitting at the right freqs you should have no trouble tranlating to a real system with balanced subwoofers and such. just my 2 cents though.
