change the name, what do people actually call it dungeon... haha
or are you saying change it from the name dubstep to something else?

naming it is killing it
Re: Change the name of the sound Youngsta is pushing.
people sort of refer to it as that 'type' of sound. I don't think people refer to it directly as that, at least I hope not.wizeguy wrote:change the name, what do people actually call it dungeon... haha

The sound Youngsta is pushing is dubstep, without a shadow of a doubt. The influx of crap played out on radio to get dollar is just a fad.

Just this year in Houston we brought
Mala, Moldy, Zed Bias, Ramadanman/Pearson Sound, Plastician, Breakage, Dubbel Dutch
and we have Addison Groove this weekend, then Kingdom & Bok Bok, Breakage, Distance, and Truth. And that's just what we've announced.

Re: Change the name of the sound Youngsta is pushing.
To reiterate the post right above me, I don't even live in Houston and I knew Addison Groove was playing out there this weekend(I know, "aren't I special?")...but my point is this, Texas does *not* have a "shit scene", there's a great scene down here, you just have to keep your eyes open for the events that push the sound you want to hear. And plus, frankly, Houston is ripe for a regular night that isn't playing all hard stuff(or, maybe more to your liking, no hard stuff at all), so you've got a lane you could create right there.
p.s. Frankly, I think the name "dungeon" is even dumber than dubstep, so don't focus on a name, 'cause it will only go downhill from there. If it's got bass(or hell, even if it doesn't), you like it, great!
p.p.s. If you want to double your fun, this Sunday in Austin has both Addison Groove *and* Silkie in one event, so yeah, stoked

Re: Change the name of the sound Youngsta is pushing.
See you at Smart Bar tonight. My set is from 10-midnight and I will not be playing any brostep shit. Honestly, people who want stuff 'dirty as fuck' have never heard Benton, Distance, etc. Distance - Victim Support is harder than any Skrillex or Borgore track ever. Even in Chicago it's quite frustrating. I just moved into a new place and the person who lives below me - who is a wonderful guy and great neighbor - told me he produces dubstep and had been in the scene for 4-6 months. I told him I DJ and play dubstep and grime (he thought 'grime' referred to artists like Datsik AKA 'grimey dubstep'). We started talking about artists and he mentioned Flux, Dr P, and of course Skrillex. He asked for my favorite producers and I said, Distance, Kryptic Minds, Seven, Skream, etc. I told him that I enjoyed Flux and Dr P (which is true to an extent) but I was generally into the darker, more minimal sound. His reaction? "Oh like Datsik or Excision?"bidwell wrote:this is true, chicago is not bad at all. in fact, noah d just played smart bar not too long ago, silkies going to be there on thursday. i've tried being proactive in my area, the sorry thing about it is, no one wants to listen unless it's 'dirty as fuck'.kaiten wrote:There are many in the states pushing the good sounds, you just have to dig. I think it's just ignorance. People haven't been exposed to a wide range of artists. That's why when I play to a 'brostep' crowd I'll play Circus stuff along with the more subtle dancefloor stuff IE Wheel & Deal, Skream tunes, etc.
@OP I think the best advice is to just do your own thing. I started a night at a bar that was not right for dubstep at all, but just by doing the night twice (once in June, once in July) I now have the opportunity to play out a lot more and push the sounds I like. It's good to add to your 'resume,' so to speak.
Anyway, my 2 cents.

Don't give up hope in my generation please! haha some of us actually like original dubstep
I love original dub and I know how all of you feel with all this UKF stuff floating around. I have friends who say mala and kromestar are lame because it has no osci. You have to understand that my generation follows mainstream stuff and if it isn't hitting mainstream, then it isn't cool. just like what Marshall Masters said they just like it loud and lets not forget VERY obnoxious.

jeez this topic is so boring now
it doesn't need its name changing, it just needs people who are bright enough to sift through the shit, which should be everyone.
theres no real problem here. its the same in every genre just people don't piss and moan over it in theres.
(EG. punk = hardcore/ska/2step/rockabilly etc.... subgenres!)

Re: Change the name of the sound Youngsta is pushing.
I always had the impression that the "original" sub-heavy dubstep sound never actually took off in a big way. The only reason that dubstep is ever mentioned here in the US is because of tracks like Where's My Money and Woo Boost. Tracks that I enjoy to this day, but they seem to have got people thinking that there's a formula to this kind of music...there isn't.Clean wrote:Yea man I know how you feel. My friends only listen to "Filth" They dont even have good enough subwoofers to appreciate some good tunes. I tried to play some loefah, and his computer speakers just farted some noise. And back to Skrillex they went.

i dont know what the scene in houston is like, but if u really do pay attention and are willing to make the occasional drive its rather easy to skip the stuff u know u dont want to hear. and theres nothing wrong with showing up just in time for the DJ ur interested in

Re: Change the name of the sound Youngsta is pushing.
This reminds me of some dub (reggae subgenre). you could only appreciate some MASSIVE king tubby, or sly and robbie if you have good speakers. IMO if nothing is missing from the tune if you play it on laptop speakkers, its likely to b shit.Clean wrote:Yea man I know how you feel. On some Commodo tracks, if i play it on my laptop, its like someone has EQ'ed the bass down completely. The track becomes drums and some mid/high synths.
Now THAT is what bass music is supposed to do.
