Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
thanks again; thanks deafblind for being little bit harsher haha, do you think layering some more snares will help more than eq in this case? yeah burial is huge but right now maybe more chllngr fan haha or murcof
@swaggr really like the snare its crispy and the shuffly groove is nice too; maybe try taking more elements away when the bass breathes out like after the snare or work with less elements at a time but thats probably me because i like less sounds for most of the time.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@swagger : Tune Up : I'd look at tuning your snare up just a little to get it to sit better with the rest of the track (yes, I tune my perc *grin*). First drop good, I'd like it a little more upfront - the stab noise particularly needs to be sitting higher, and with it's mid-range emphasised (it's the right sound, just needs some EQ). Good choice of melodic elements. In the mid-drop, up to 4/4 I'm not super keen on that transition as I think you built a vibe in the previous sections that was suitable. Your kick, definitely has a lot of 30-50hz "weight" to it, I'd EQ that out pretty much and make sure it's hitting 80-120hz, which will give your sub room to breath. Lots of ideas in here too, I think with a few EQ tricks, some limiting and general finesse you have a solid track on your hands. Last critique, it sounds very very dry, that would help with the fullness.

You do get your teeth stuck into feedback!deafblindmusic wrote:@ascian : The Sky's Not Blue : Very clean sounding to me in terms of mixdown. Feel is interesting, kinda stilted and broken, which I like. Needs moar sub
Yeah, there isn't even a sub instrument in there.. All sub is coming from the kick. Hmm.... 808 sub line after the second drop part *thinks...*

Oh I get it entirely, recipe I've used for dnb snares:BudSpencerTron wrote:thanks haha no ment in a positiv way, i like to here this is good thats good but that doesnt bring me further, maybe a bit ;koan sounds snare is crazy but would rather try to get closer to this type of snares myself by learning than actually sampling
- 1x 909 snare with a long release
- 1x 909 snare with a shorter release, tuned up slightly for that punchy initial transient
- Clap with a short duration for more transient attack, low in mix
- A crash very low in mix for that "sheen" in the tail end, with the initial attack chopped out, you want sheen, not crash
- Compression with a slower attack so the initial "snap" pops through, then pretty aggressive ratio (4:1) with a lowish threshhold and short release
- EQ to bring out all the frequencies you want
- Reverb on it if you feel like it
- Sample down, normalise, feed that sample back in and mix up the other "child" snares, play with tuning etc etc.
Erm, yeahAscian wrote:You do get your teeth stuck into feedback! Yeah, there isn't even a sub instrument in there.. All sub is coming from the kick. Hmm.... 808 sub line after the second drop part *thinks...*
@Specimen-Yarp : A LOT better, snare good
Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Haven't been on this thread in a few days, figured I'd come by and throw about some feedback along with my funky shitty WIP.
Feedback for others:
@Ascian: I like the intro ambiance and panning, goes nicely with the vocal. The whole song is nicely clean and crisp. Although I'd say maybe slightly more punch to the kick is needed and maybe another layer of bass?
@Swaggr: Like I've said before, your melody is sweet. Drop still needs to be heavier imo, everything else is nice although to me the main melody gets kinda of drowned in when theres multiple mid/bass like in the 1:00 section (may just be my headphones). Btw any chance I could get a 320 mp3, the download on SC is an aif
@Specimen-Yarp: Nice use of that Excision Shambhala 2009 intro
 I like the main part of the song, I'm not so keen on the latter sped up part, sounds too fast. Also the main bass gets kind of samey, maybe chop it up with another synth?
Idk wtf I'm going to do with this WIP, probably nothing, at least it amused me making it. Bonus points to whoever knows where the title/sample comes from.
It's glitchy/electro house btw not dubstep so yeh....

@E-T-F Nice deep dark sound! That bass is evil, I think it could use a sub under it for even more deepness though. The drums are good and so is the tune mixing wise
 Good work
mthrfnk Those fx sound good, don't really know what I think of the vocal. When the bass drop I think it sound empty, something is missing, maybe a sound as the lead but on a lower octave underneath?
BudSpencertron This sounds very good, good amount of sub. The intro is really great with that distorted little noise, really good drumwork aswell. 1:52 and on is really beautiful, that flute reminds me a bit of stuff by Loefah. Nice work!
Since I didn't get any comments on my clip I posted earlier ill just put up the finished product, hope you guys like!

@etf : I'm liking the pace and general vibe on this, I left it running when I left the studio and came back and was like, erm, did I leave some Vex'd on or something? Then realised
 Nice track, deep, simple, clean.
@ninthy4 - This is pure filth, dark. Love it. Also, sure I commented before. Mixdown is nice too (at least on my Truth's). Only critique would be more punch on the snare - although the sound is appropriate for this track. The bass mid-range is stomping on it just a little. You still aint answered my question on your reeses in Firedance
Guys, I gotta be honest, the quality level on everyone's starter tracks seems to be going through the roof, kinda excites me to hear what everyone is producing!

@ETF
Nice stuff man! Love the deep vibes and production is top knotch. Its reminds me a little of Lituya Bay by The Widdler which is one of my favorite tunes by him so big ups!
@Turnipish
Pretty solid production. The only issue I really had with it was that the intro was a bit disjointing because of the reverse hits and the reverb of the snare clashing. Kinda difficult for someone to get the timing right in a mix. But good work so far!
@iamFiction
The drums sounds nice and full but the bass is a bit overbearing in the mid and high range freq. It just sounds a bit too loud. You might try and put a bit of full mix compression and EQ to even out the volume. Difficult for me to enjoy a tune that hurts my ears.
Here's a clip of my new tune "These Faces." I know the kick is a bit weak in the mix once the sub hits. I forgot to layer the midrange kick in so that will be fixed. Any and all feedback is appreciated

@swaggr try adding some reverb on the drums and a bit on the bassline, along with some distortion. Low freq bass seems good
@specimenyarp layer a sub bass with your bassline to make the sound fatter, drum work is good along with the pattern variations; use some crashes
@mthrfnk nice backbone, I think you should add more percussion to create a groove
@ETF diggin the deep vibes, just throw some more pads / fx and maybe some more percussion
@ninthy4 fat fat sound man, I feel some shufflin hats or just some more hats will help the track move along nicely
@Malleus sounding good, i would suggest throwing more fx on the bassline like reverb and distortion and maybe lower the volume alittle for the mixdown
heres some 140bpm music i made, suggestions? i feel its too long ;o

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@bola - digging the pad loop, always stuck on music like that (particularly drone ambient). I'd try shifting the pad up and down an octave or a couple of notes at the end of each 16 bar section. Super clean sounding mixdown (reminds me of Global Communication/Tom Middleton). I agree it's a little on the long side, I'd aim to chop 2 minutes out of it. In fact, just chop from 3:02 to 3:58 out, and use the drop you have there. That's a minute saved. You can cut 20 seconds out of the intro if you drop straight into the percussion (and filter in the looped pad sound). The little mid-range bass sound you don't use enough towards the end, I'd make more of a feature of it, and cut out the filtered pad here and there to add variation.

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
thanks for advice deafblind

@bola really like the atmosphere created with your pads really space but its really long in terms of changes happening within the elements maybe you can keep the length of the tune but add some more filters to the pads from time to time; and i would take the bottom of the panning reece sound to mono.what i really would like to here in this one are some vocoder phrases
@etf really nice dungeon vibe here ,maybe add some more delay or reverb to the more midrange part of the bass like snare and then wub wub wub dubdelay haha would love that. really like the untypical drumsetting its not really shuffly but really nice. now you just have to find sme elements to bring the tune further after the nearly 3 minutes. really like it
@malleus sub is on point haha, love it would say just do the obvious and take a frequency shifter or something similar and change the midrange every 8 or 16 bar
proceeded with my wobbly tune little bit
