[dunkelbunt] & The Secret Swing Society (LIVE 4 PIECE BAND), JONAH K, LIVING~STONE, CONGA DOGG, FREEDOM DANISH, dBOOM, ROLLIN' CASH, MEDICINEMAN
On September 30th, cirQlar will tip its top hat to Summer and twirl its moustache with a dastardly grin in anticipation of darkening days. Invoking the curious and elusive spirits of Eastern European circus folk we invite all friends, foes and fans to join us as we amaze, shock, delight and disturb in our travels from Big Top to Fun House.
“Berzerka” promises to be the wildest Balkan-Breakbeat-Gypsy jam this town has ever seen, all in celebration of the 10th annual Small World Music Festival. The event returns the wildly popular Dunkelbunt (Austria) to Toronto for a live set Under the Big Top, featuring the Canadian debut of his 5-piece band, and supported by local legends Conga Dogg (Toronto), dBOOM (Kismet) and our own Rollin’ Cash (cirQlar) and Medicineman (Small World Music, cirQlar).
And in order to pay proper homage to Jonah K’s *The Doom Dub* EP release, we'll pull out all the stops to ensure that it gets good & weird in the Fun House! Living~Stone (Montreal/DalyCityRecords) and Freedom Danish (The Root Sellers/Pop and Lock Records) bring the bass to support alchemical mastermind, Jonah K (Suma/Permanent Damage Records) in what will be a most nefarious musical deluge.
The stage will be set by Amiraworks, with Ringmaster Dave McKay and the inimitable Emma Wemma as our hosts. The aerial stylings of Diana Lopez are sure entrance and delight while Circus Alchemy, Pyromeo, and Ben Burland will conspire to whisk revellers off into the night!

[dunkelbunt] aka Ulf Lindemann surely counts among the most influential global beat troubadours of the early 21st century. Not only is he known for his work as a composer, producer, DJ, radio editor and multi-instrumentalist, but also for his exquisite remixes of and collaborations with international artists such as Balkan Beat Box, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Boban Markovic Orkestar, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Watcha Clan, Harry Stoijka, 17Hippies and Waldeck, just to name a few. This year, he'll take another musical step forward, by finally fulfilling a long-nourished dream: performing his own material with a full band line-up, including Percussions, Keyboards, Clarinette, Guitar, Bass, Beat Box, Horns, Vocals and of course himself on Piano, Electronics and others. Lindemann started his musical career as a youngster producing Hip Hop and electronic music. Later on he studied Jazzpiano, began to work as a DJ and organised and hosted live-performances and clubnights. Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Lindemann moved to Vienna in 2001. Initially inspired by its rich electronic music scene, he quickly fell for Vienna's unique cultural "Melange", its musical diversity that unites influences of traditional music from the Balkan to the Orient."The world offers a breathtaking plurality of music", he says. "It wouldn't cross my mind to settle for only one style." The result is the unmistakable [dunkelbunt] sound, where Dub, Hip Hop and Dancehall meet Electro-Swing, Balkan Beatz and Urban Klezmer. [dunkelbunt] is a traveller on behalf of the music, his mission is the search for an harmoniuos whole. Therefore he travels the planet, armed with open eyes and ears and a microphone, to collect sounds, colours, smells and all kinds of sensual impressions. Although his musical essence is based upon the south-eastern corners of Europe, sounds from all around the world are to be enjoyed: from Vienna to the Balkans, through Anatolia and the Middle East, to India, North Africa, all the way to South America, to Jamaica and then straight to the swinging North American Thirties. "When performing, I am travelling around the world together with my audience. Timelessly we are dancing through Countries and Continents, getting drunk with the infinite beauty of the music."
Jonah K is a musician, artist and electronic alchemist known for his richly detailed visual art and dark, bass-driven music. His matchless musical style is a fusion of Drum & Bass and West Coast Dubstep, featuring heavy delays, spine-chilling melodies, dusty samples and syncopated rhythms. For over ten years, Jonah K has been one of the most sought-after DJs in Toronto’s underground party scene, cutting his teeth on the jungle and drum & bass circuit in the‘90s. His insatiable hunger for experimentation has seen him take a distinctive and dexterous approach to dubstep, championing the genre in his native Canada. He has played events throughout North America, the Middle East and Asia alongside many great artists, such as Beats Antique, Heyoka, Eskmo, Sub Swara, Deadbeat, Trace, Shpongle, Bassnectar, D-Nox, DJ Dopey, Akufen and Midimilliz.
His latest release ‘Eye Of The Storm’ landed him on the Mixmag weekly DJ charts and has gained support from UK tastemakers DK Ninja Tunes Solid Steel Radio, DJ Wonder and DJ Allbury of Rinse FM, as well as Shelley Parker. He has previously released other material, most recently the full-length album Dwaallicht, which combines world influences and breakbeat in a style reminiscent of Beats Antique. Jonah is also one half of the curious chamber pop duo Squidlid (http://www.squidlid.com), whose work defies comparison.
