Wez Saunders - Shuckle Nuffling
A single electric cowbell ping with plenty of reverb gives the aural illusion that it's a dub track, though there's an understated drive in the hats that keeps the momentum on the right side of dopey. The "Shuckle Nuffling" by Wez Saunders really does chart new territory and is one of those "shuffle" pieces which feel like they're in 3/4 time thanks to plenty of triplets in the percussion. The title becomes relevant when you hear the electro-theremin-sounding melody and its jingle brand of catchiness—a theme tune of sorts that steals the show with a scratch-like lead line, chords plucked from some moon safari and a bass that moves and massages in equal measure.
While Franzis-D remix is all about bouncing layers off one another, this seems a deliberate step in the opposite direction, gradually morphing what's already there to create a hypnotic, encapsulating track, there's no hint of his deep house influences. Structurally, things feel less than organic too, upon introducing new elements to the mix with similar sense of urgency, but it's less intense this time.
Oscitone's remix preserves little more than the vocals, swapping out the drums and keys for brittle machine rhythms and acid squelch, what's striking is how faithful he remains to the spirit of the original, despite the extent of the remodel with harmonies and chord changes that blow the spectrum wide open. It never goes over the top, though, imbued with a restraint that suits its middling tempo.
