What's in a name? Being under-appreciated.

Post by nousd » Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:52 am

Akkachar & Taz Buckfaster
unmemorable names
but yet imo they've produced tracks that satisfy
the yearning for tunes between KM heaviness & HPP stories

A thread dedicated to the producers who have sidelined themselves
by being better musos than wordsmiths.

I chose my name around 2000/01.

Regretted it since about 2005.

or Bulletproof
or Western Synthetics' unappreciated genius

cos peeb can't get past a name

like Be1ne...why not B1?

awkward semantic self-apppraisal
leads to peebs' mis-judgement
missed focus

cos it's all about advertising :T:

:t:

I spent a few seconds thinking up this name as something to put on a mixtape, failed tocome up with something better when I got my first couple of gigs and by that time it felt like a regressive step to try and start out fresh with a new identity - that was 2 years ago and I still haven't changed it.

First time I saw myself mentioned on a blog post it was as "The ridiculously-named Cogidubnus"

£10 Bag's a cracking monicker btw

mine was a poor choice. Recently changed mine to SDB to give it a better ring though.
People see my name and think brostep unfortunately.

SDB? hey brother.

cixxxj
actraiser
mutegx
morphamish
asusu

I still consider Oneohtrix Point Never the most odd name I've seen, and I've seen plenty of them.

I used to make/spin idm under the name tHALidomide many many years ago...that's pretty bad

I always thought actraiser and asusu were ace names. Odd how much good music gets past upon due to letter prejudice. Considering most bigger artists names sound like metal bands.

to be clear, I'm not having a shot a producers with awkward names
just saying there's some, like above mentioned,
who haven't recieved the kudos they deserve
cos they don't have the simple brand names that stick in memory like:

skream
mala
benga
d1
pinch
scuba
sully
untold
coki
burial
rusko
caspa
(exceptions like Ramadanman & HPP sort of prove the rule)

ambiguous, more complex names tend take longer to accept, however fine their tunage:
phaelah
hyetal
appleblim
komonazmuk
sukh knight
gravious
in a lot of cases this may be deliberate reticence

interestingly, the current hard wobble crew tend to double barrel, longer names
flux pavillion
foreign beggars
trolley snatcha

altho skrillex & noisia, are names which perfectly market the sound.

Shreddex is an odd one for me. I didn't even want to give him a listen, because I was so sure it would be yoi yoi shit-step, but instead he writes bare dark monsterous tunes. I always quite liked the name Taz Buckfaster. It sticks out in my mind. And anyone sleeping on his tunes isn't on their A game. He's got mad love out in SF, I hear his tunes dropped more than a lot of other big UK producers.
