I don't like Skrillex at all. Like, at al, but that was actually pretty good. Would sound good in some hard edged drum & bass.

+1 for FM8, monster synth, in fact anything in the Komplete Synths package pretty much rules...except Pro53, that's #yawn#

pro-53 is great, if you get the hang of it you can get really awesome sound out of it. maybe not an allrounder like massive but definetly great in what it does.

I too would like to further understand FM8. I really couldn't get anywhere close to what you came up with. +1 for patch and tutorial!
Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
I had another go at this today but my end result came out quite distorted and muddy, still hoping you make a tut for this.

I'm just trying to perfect the sound, tutorial coming soon! Got it sounding a lot clearer and with less random high feedback noises.

Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
So when you use FM8 or any FM synth, do you actually design specific sounds? Like, when I want to make a sound in Massive I usually "visualise" it in my mind then I have a clear pathway in my head of how I plan to make that sound.
I understand what FM synthesis is and how it works, but when I'm playing around with it I always just mess around until I get something good. I can never actually figure out how to make a sound without doing a ton of tweaking and messing around first. I'd like to learn FM synthesis but this has been discouraging me alot. Is that just the nature of FM synthesis or can you actually get good at it?

Hell yeah, if you did all of that without any tweaking (I failed to read the OP thoroughly, it seems), then you're ahead of the curve. Slight pitch bends and automated EQ peaks to form more exaggerated vowels, while coupled with some finely tuned distortion, phaser and chorus, could get this sounding as close to the bass as you can get without being named Sonny. I wouldn't mind a tutorial either only because I'm (STILL) not very proficient with FM8 and have been painstakingly trying to learn its interface.Noisestorm wrote:I actually haven't automated any EQ's to make this patch, it's just raw FM8, mabye I could try to automate them and get an even closer sound?Grimenoceros wrote:It's not so much the patch as it is automating an EQ to MAKE it "growl" by creating vowel formants. It was all discussed in the thread about Skrillex revealing how he makes his basses, it's still in the first two pages I think. But yes, Noisestorm, that is a very good example and it sounds pretty nice.

Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
nice one noisestorm! i would try it but FM8 is dear as fuck
Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
You know if you dont have the time to make a tutorial you can just post the patch.
Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
Bigups mite!
great sound, it obvious that if you'll add a filter like EQ/change the frequency, the sound will be much more complex
waiting for a tutorial!

Re: Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)
yeah you can get sounds like this directly out of FM8. I only started getting to grips with it last week. You can get the vowels SO easily hahaha, there is an effect labelled "Talk" and literally just does YOYs lol
Still, I had alot of fun bouncing bits out of FM8 and resampling, you can get some mental stuff coming out of it
Look at tutorials on FM synthesis as a whole and not necessarily specific to FM8 it will defo help
