Reccomended to work on many projects at once?

Lets say you've been working on a project and just completely ran out of ideas, is it reccomended to stick to it and strictly focus on one track before you get side tracked with more work or work on multiple tracks at once ?

There's absolutely no "answer" to that question, everyone ticks in different ways and at different speeds; if it works for you, then it works. It's of course advisable to focus on one track just as it's advisable for a foreman to focus on one building at a time, but people do all sorts of crazy shit because it works for THEM. So if it works for you to split your attention, do it.

All depend what works best for you, and the only way to find that out is to try working in different ways.

Anytime. Yeah, just mind the assholes and you'll go far here. I only started producing February of this year and I've gotten quite far with good ol' DSF as my base of operations for researching the shit out of everything and generally learning as much as possible, so keep on keepin' on.

If you are new to producing, it'd be best to finish the track, whether it is shit or not. Otherwise when you have something good, you aren't going to know how to turn it into a full-on song.

I agree with Heartless. If you get into a habit of just moving on all the time - you'll never complete anything. I will finish everything I start unless I'm not feeling it at all - simply because you learn a HEAP by doing a whole tune. Otherwise, totally agree with what has already been said. Find your rhythm

As for assholes comment - just don't go asking questions that can easily be answered by doing your research first. Lots of us here started on these very forums and had the initiative to really go hard in the study area. Read the bible, read about creating basses, and read about mixdowns. Learn about synthesis, read up on some basic music theory such as scales/chords.etc. A day a week reading will really equip you in your studio

Also, think about before it was 98% software. In the olden times (aka 15 years ago or so), most people had to finish a track before they moved on, because once you reset the console, that's it. You could write down all the little settings and dial them in one by one if you REALLY had to, but realistically, that was it. There was no total recall in every single thing like there is today. Motorized consoles are much more affordable now, but they are still ridiculously expensive, so think about a decade or 2 ago. The reason I mention this, is because working that way might "force" you to finish stuff, and limiting yourself like that can often be very helpful. Of course, you can always open it back up in 6 months and it will be fine, but don't be afraid to work on multiple things at once because it really is a nice luxury today.

Like others said there is no real answer to that question, but I can tell you my personal view and that is multiple projects are great to get your musical juices flowing, but also to learn a hell of a lot more about other genre's and adding new things and techniques used in other music to your "main" project. So I say go for it if you have the time.

i wouldnt be in the "creative" stage of more than one song at a time if i were you but i like taking a break from writing chords and shit to going to mixdown another of my tunes and vice versa

I don't see too much of a problem with it. I often find if I'm running out of steam with one track, if I start another then come back to it I'll find it easier to carry on. This may not happen for everyone, although there's only one way to find out I guess

I generally have 2 tracks I work on at any given time. I don't intend to, but usually something in track 1 will inspire me to make another track so I can use a sound I came up with but won't fit in track 1. I've always loved to multitask though, and you may not.

Just go with whatever comes to you, making music is all about you and what you like.

Personally, I like to leave something once my attention has faded from it, and then return to it at another point, or use the parts from it in another tune. A lot of my production peers, like to focus on 1 thing at a time. Depends on the individual imo.

While it's good to take breaks from a tune and freshen your mind to it, be careful of never finishing tunes. I used to take a break from a tune by starting a new one and now have a few dozen unfinished tunes on my harddrive that will likely never get finished. I typically only have 2-5 projects going at the same time with every intention of finishing them.

You ever considered recycling the parts from the tunes you don't think you'll finish? Helps me cut down on my scrap files a lot

And a few dozen really isn't anything to get sore over imo

Most of the bass sounds in my current tunes are recycled from unfinished work.

At least I'm productive with my production A.D.D.

yeah lol ive got about 500 unfinished tunes sitting around

I've already come down quite hard on myself and have discovered I have a very high attention to detail, so even after getting into producing over the last couple of months I haven't let myself start a new track untill I've felt like i've taken my current project to a level of completion. In my mind this makes sense as It means overcoming problems that'd be easier to walk away from, thus bettering yourself when you find your way round a brick wall. I have mates that start projects and never finish them and just sit there doing nothing, they say they'll go back to them but never do. Each to his own though just do whatever suits you, no point forcing yourself to do stuff if you don't enjoy it.
