How to get the heavy drumstep lead

Like in songs such as raindrops by fytch, borgore's delicious, kinda flux pavillions bass cannon, and 12th planets lootin 92. Its like a continual heavy bass with quite a lot of high end as well. I know its all about saws and getting your EQ right, but seriously its harder than it sounds. Anyone ever done a good one or know an easier way of getting a some good frequencies on one?

raindrops isnt drumstep and neither is bass canon. but sounds like detuned saws with heavy distortion. may have to layer diff sounds ontop of each other

Yeah it is all about layering. tbh alot of the sounds we all like to recreate or love in the 'Tearout' side of dubstep are layered. Its actually crazy how much of a difference 2 or even 3 sounds can make together rather than one.
If you EQ 2 basslines together correctly and get 2 sounds that work well together and compliment each other, you can get some fuck off heavy bass and (excuse the term) ' Pure filth.'

I am now a big fan of layering basslines after realising how heavy it can make it compared with one.

To answer the OP's question more specfically, try and get one high pitched sound and one mid range (they will need to compliment each other so a bit of experimenting with the 2 sounds will be needed). Make sure you EQ the 2 basslines to not conflict lots of the same frequency range, and also use different osscilator waveforms for each sound. If you use the exact same you will get clashes and phasing. Also when it comes to distortion dont go overboard otherwise it will just sound naff. Certain waveforms in massive carry enough grit and distortion without needing to use a distortion plugin outside of massive.

i never knew that about layering with the same waveform.. never even thought about that.. .is that true? That using the same waveform could cause problems? Im trying to think of my best basses and what the layered waveforms were, ill have to go back and look when I get home... but thats interesting!

The Bass Cannon lead is a simple sawtooth bass layered underneath one instance of Massive. Try the formant setting on your oscillators to get the screaming sound.

Two waveforms that are not detuned will cause phasing issues, yes

Using massive btw if that helps, and I am aware that they aren't drumstep, but its a very popular sort of sound used in the genre

Interesting ideas guys, I'll have a play around

Check out forgive me (heist remix) as well, probs the best example of this kinda bass

yeah it sounds like raindrops is 2 layers, well 3 counting the sub. sounds like its one lower mid but still screamish sounding probly a detuned saw with some dist etc.. and then another more airy high end layer.
