What Turntable should I purchase ?

Post by _TraX_ » Sat Sep 10, 2011 11:04 pm

I wanna start buying Vinyls online from dealers such as Chemical and Boomkat, to contribute and also for the experience. I need help with purchasing a turn-table, I'm thinking of buying the Sony PS LX300 with USB and a preamp built in, but are there any other good ones under 200 dollars ?

buying anything for less than $200 (and some would say more) is just a waste of money. i have a secondhand audio technica lp 120, but i consider myself to be a novice so for me it does the job. it really depends on what kind of time investment you want to make.

Buy a Technic...... they are pricy, but you can always sell it for the same, if not more than what you pay, as they are no longer made, and they will last forever, trust me

I would only recommend Technics 1210 or 1200 to be honest. I started off with Numark decks and as soon as I felt what Technics felt like I had to get some, wish I just bought them from the start. They're pretty much a world standard!

started off w/a pair of cheap stantons, and yeah they're good to start with and learn yer basics but there's really nothing like riding out a good mix on a pair of tech 1200s...see avatar. heh :W:

Ohhh no I don't want it to DJ, I just want a single record player, to listen to tracks, give my bland room sonic life. Simply just to listen, and experience the music outside my laptop headphones.

This, basically. You only upgrade if you buy cheap ones now anyway, thus working out more expensive.

Technics 1210's are the only way to go... inevitably there will be a day when you want to start mixing those tunes - you should be able to pick up a single deck for around $200 if you search hard enough. I bought 2 x technics 1210's from my local cash converters for £375.....

I bought my decks over 5 years ago, and here's my two cents. Even if you are just starting out, I wouldn't settle for anything too cheap. I made the mistake of buying belt drive tables. I gained a lot of experience learning on a shitty setup though!

Technics all the way. My 13 year old pair of mk2s are still going strong with minimal maintenance along the way, and my 6 year old mk5s are as crisp as the day they were made.

I am also looking for a record player, but it's probably best to look for a used one!

there is no way you can lose with a Technics deck....you will likely be able to sell it for more than you paid if you need to part with it. spending money on anything else is just a waste really.

*edit

also in the long run a few hundred extra spent on decks will be much smaller than the amount you will end up spending on records.

What do you guys think of the Sony PS LX300?
I also saw some sort of Sony one at my Cash Converters for like 50 bucks...Now I'm starting to think that wouldn't be the smartest choice..

I found some older numark pro-tt's online and spent about 300 ($) for the pair. I know they're not as "good" as 1200's but They're built just as sturdy (they're heavy metal, not plastic like numarks are today) and I've played with 1200's before and honestly couldn't tell the difference. My recommendation would be to go on ebay and either look for these or some used 1200's. These things last forever so you don't really need to worry about buying used (for the most part) and buying used will not break your bank nearly as much as new ones will.
