DJ Semtex and Dizzee Rascal

Post by tee2006 » Sat May 26, 2007 9:13 am

I just saw these on Pop World (I'm hung over) and got a bit confused.

There was NO scratching of the tune at all. It was just a CD playing. And there's Semtex in the background 'scratching' his one armed ass off.

A quick close up shot reveals it's a CD deck too.

So are they just going for the typical 'here's a rapper so u need a fake dj behind him' or have i missed out on a new air turntablism craze?

Hmmmmmmmmmm. HMMMMMMM.

it's about like perceived "urban" credibility. like when daniel bedingfield was on TOTP after getting to number one, he had a DJ scratching along in the background, and in the bit of the song without any singing, bedingfield would scream on the mic something like "big up DJ ozzzy b!". it's just cynical marketing

on this subject, i heard in the audio clip that was posted up the other day from 2003 about 'newstep', that artwork produced "gotta get thru this". now i'd always thought bedingfield did it himself, as the whole media line was "look this guy made this number 1 tune in his own bedroom" and at the time it was really inspiring for me. also on the record sleeve itself, it makes no mention of artwork at all.....all a bit strange...

Really weird, i had a converstaion about 'fake djs' at MTV awards.

Unless the dj is scratching samples that are layed over the track live, I don't know.

is it just me who feels Dizzees video for Sirens is racist - probably for the same reason?

Funny thing is, Semtex can't scratch either. Unless he wants to do a whole routine of baby scratches and scribbles.....

The original Daniel Beddingfield production of 'Gotta Get Through This' was big on the underground. It was quite repititive & minimalist, it was surprising when DND made it more commercial sounding for the chart version.

I think the original version was on a Pure Garage CD.

more of a black and white unite kinda guy myself. sorry but I don't go for demonisation of a race in a pop video. Imagine if it was the other way. A white guy being hunted by a gang of evil looking black people....

The video is potentially symbolic of racism if you wanna look at it lke that, but in no way is it actually racist.

lol, cause that happens all the time....

white europeans enslave africans, bring them to the americas, keep colonies, brutally oppress a race of people through violence and intimidation for 400 years, and then flip it in order to EXPLOIT everyone equally to the point where shit is so PC that artistic interpretations of reality get flagged racist, lol..

its the music, sharing of stories, experiences experienced that unites. evil looking white people hunting me down on horses feels pretty acurate sometimes... yeah.

i dont really like the video tbh... but whatever thats just me bein picky..

i do like the chase & status remix tho :D

my perception is the video reinforces negative stereotypical representations of both young black men as individuals and white people as a racial group. to me that's racism.

http://www.iht.com/articles/1998/07/03/london.t.php

"Blacks, Asians and members of other minorities make up more than 10 percent of London's population but account for only 3 percent of the Metropolitan Police force: 871 out of nearly 27,000 members. Nationally, only 1 percent of police members come from minority groups, though they comprise 6 percent of the population." (kinda old, best i could find quick..)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kin ... population

"21% of prisoners were from ethnic minorities, who form around 10% of the total population."

THATS racism.

and its way worse here in the states.

way worse.

theres a huge difference between stereotype and fact, and the fact is that 8.1% of black men 25-29 in the US are locked up. 1.1% of whites. shit is fucked. and despite looking like #'s & %'s, those are people.

and we ought to talk about it. and certainly make art with it, thats how we communicate.

sorry to debate & thread jack a little, but this is one of those things that bothers the shit out of me....
