Never went in there when they had the old system, the current one was more than decent though. Bodes well for next week's FWD though, interested to see what they've done.

Exactly, the Pro Media branded Funktion One was fantastic anyway. Excited to see what's changed...wilson wrote:Never went in there when they had the old system, the current one was more than decent though. Bodes well for next week's FWD though, interested to see what they've done.

Anyone know what's happening tonight? Heard it might be Kode 9 instead of the Kryptic Minds et all line up?

I couldn't make it last night but my mate said the booth is now on the opposite wall, kinda behind the bar end? The speakers are now built into the walls or something? Maybe they are making more space in there which is a good thing and bad thing.
LESS BASSWEIGHT?!

Yeah there is a partition between the bar and dancefloor now, and the booth is built into that partition facing the dancefloor (obviously). The speakers have been built into the walls and it does create more space in there. Maybe that's why the bass didn't seem to really fill the room like it used to, I couldn't feel the pressure of it at all and I wandered round til i'd found a sweet spot for it too. Might not have cranked it right up last night seeing as the renovations didn't seem completely finished. Re: FWD 15th Sept CANCELLED / New sound system?!
Apologies for all this moaning but I care about it quite a lot.
I was in London at the weekend to go to Fabric on Friday which unfortunately was heaving and full at 1am so was at Plastic People both Friday and Saturday. I’d been to the old place about 3 or 4 times for FWD over the last 2 years or so. I just wish to start out by saying that I loved FWD and if I appear to viciously attacking Plastic People now it is only because I am so so saddened by what they are doing.
To sum it up, FWD for me was this amazing place where everybody seemed to be there to see someone who they liked DJ (not to chat to someone they knew). A rather homely feel with only 200 people and cool enough staff who weren’t subjected to, or subjecting others to any stupid rules or tedious queues and stripsearches. And quite frankly, I didn’t understand what a sound system was or what it did until I went to FWD and experienced that.
The new sound system is not even worth talking about in my opinion, but here goes. It was better on the Saturday with Floating Points so I’ll start with that although it seems to depend on how much the DJ is pushing the fader. Eg. After Floating Points played a Burial track on Saturday, you could tell he was pushing the sound up and up for each song after. There is no dynamic range between 0db and 0db with added distortion. In any case, unless the DJ is being a complete idiot, he shouldn’t be able to make it sound so bad by pushing the volume up full!!
Even when the system isn’t being pushed to distortion, it doesn’t sound that good. There are spots where you can stand and feel the bass in your feet a little, but this requires standing nearer the big speaker which 50-75% of the time is seriously distorted.
Often when you go to a club, the first snare you hear will just about tear your face off, but due to the fletcher-munson curve, you will not hear it after 15-20 minutes. This is not the case here, the distortion is unpleasant and the only sound with consistent clarity!!!
I remember once from my times at FWD that standing in the centre of the old room could make the sound a bit snarey but that was trying to be critical. Standing over next to the bass wall was like discovering heaven! Now you need to walk around to find a spot in the room where it doesn’t sound so terrible.
Kode9 on the Friday was an abomination. I feel it is summed up best when I say that I walked out during his last track (Burial-Archangel). Given I’m not from London and don’t regularly hear that in a club, I would NEVER EVER leave with someone playing that. He did pull the fader down a little at one point during the set but not for long and even then it was still distorted for the whole 2 hours I was there.
I can live with the bass being crap compared with before, but there is no need or point in pushing the sound through the system as it is just grating on the ears. It was difficult to pick out and define instruments for Kode9. I think the best analogy is putting a loudness boost on a in-built laptop speaker.
I think my other grumbles are probably not the clubs fault in view of it’s potential licence issue last year. Finally, the door staff can now only be described as borderline friendly if you are being very generous. The search upon entry is rather over the top and feels more apt for Ministry of Sound than for PP. I appreciate the point of the smoking area but the fact they are actually enforcing the rule if you go away for a doob that you cannot get back in is so sad for me quite frankly. About a year ago I stood next to the door and smoked one I’d rolled inside! I suspect there are others who can remember even better days of smoking inside. Seems to me like it has lost almost everything it previously had. It is still a dark dance floor with no lights.
I don’t wish to sound too much like a grumpy old man but I’ve slept two nights out of the last 4 in order to go Fabric, and although I missed that, Plastic People could easily have made up for it.
