Science question: Why do we have music and dance?

Post by benj b » Sun May 27, 2007 2:01 pm

"anyone know any physiological/social/evolutionary benefits to music and dance? How did it get invented? Any why does it feel so nice?"

Music is how we remember.

Music & Dance are the cornerstones of civilisation,
they provide the framework in which society exists.

Without dance we've lost each other.

Without music we've lost everything.

Not really.

I mean it would be a bit crap without music and dance but they aren't the cornerstones of civilization.

Seems a very selective reading of history yeah.

music was & is a daily part of the lives of 'common people' & will continue to be.

during a brief period of North-Western european history the church attempted to impose a situation like the one you describe.

Like I said.
Music is how we remember.

Nope. Fucking is. That is the cornerstone of civilisation, because without it, we'd lose everything (i.e. there wouldnt be anyone around).

Nope. Senseless reproduction has as much potential to destroy a species as it does to perpetuate it.

Also, when backed into a corner a species can begin to 'reproduce' without fucking, as a female hammerhead shark recentlly proved, the only caveat bein that its a somewhat short term solution & would def be a genetic dead end street.

the inherent implication of the term cornerstone is that there are lots of them

this is a dumb argument

Music is more important than we think it is... it was the basis of language (or so I've been led to believe).

And without music adverts would be even more boring.
