Definitely would not recommend getting an AV receiver/ home cinema receiver...if you just want to listen to tunes you just need a simple integrated stereo amplifier, you will get a better stereo sound for your money.... also if you get a decent pair of floor standers, you will not need a sub - money spent on separate sub is better put into the initial speaker purchase, subs often sound clumsy, muddy and shit

if you are listening to dub, or any kind of bass heavy music you are DEFINITELY going to need a sub. i use 2 15x2 400watt speakers being fed 450RMS for my mains at bars and i still need subs. Just because the speaker can hit 30hz doesnt mean its going to be able to accurately reproduce a tone at that level while also filling out the rest of the audio spectrum.

as for the OP. i would recommend a cheaper PC speaker system if you cant afford to spend anymore. you can get a decent 100-120$ system from logitech that will blow away any budget home entertainment speaker system. But the real answer is save up for a pair of active monitors.

No, trust me. Towers will not have good bass response unless they're reeealllyy expensive. Even if the specs say that they could hit 30, with limited options for room placement, you may only hear down to 50 hz. NOT ideal for dubstep or rap for that matter.

got the same issue here, need new speakers.
tending towards 2nd hand hifi. anyone knows some fairly decent speakers? don't necessarily need a sub since I can't really play out loud so a good amp and some nice speakers will do the job. that pioneer amp is for home cinema isn't it?

I know active monitors are probably the laziest alternative but if I can't find good speakers in my country there's no sense in paying huge amounts of shipping/freight. then I'd go for a pair of Tannoy or Rokits? any other suggestions for about £300-400??

and please no towers - their hideous :4:

I'd go for active monitors if your going the production route, any cinema amp will have some sort of dsp which you don't want but if your just listening/mixing then go amp n speaker root. I'd recommend Adam A7's but think that's about £450?

Mate, no way. I recently bought a Logitech Z-5500 system and disliked it so much that I replaced it like 3 weeks later with a cheap hi-fi system. It says it responds down to 35hz, but that's bullshit. The rolloff after about 55hz kills any possible sub bass it could have had. No depth, just boomy bass at around 60-70hz and the satellites rape your ears with upper midrange at high volumes. Sounds ok if you're listening to Nero or something, terrible for Kromestar, Kryptic Minds etc. as well as any music that needs warm, natural sounding midrange.

My new system doesn't go as loud but the quality's heaps better. I'm using a $300AU Sherwood 10 inch sub with a $200AU Sherwood stereo amp, but to be fair I didn't have to buy new speakers cos I had some old IMF Electronics Monitors lying around which were worth about a grand in the late 80s. That was a massive load off my wallet. So yeah, basically if you want quality sound stay away from Logitech, hi fi all the way.

haha I've been creeping a few of these on ebay, they can go for a good price second hand.

What version do you have? I've heard the S2 has less low end as either the S1 or S3

I got S1's man, yeah I heard that too but sure S2's wud still be dope. The S1's I got are over 10 years old now but get them off some nutty hifi enthusiast who had them on his second system upstairs that he mainly just used headphones on so reckoned had less than 50 hours use. Probably the best 300 iv ever spent, do it man!
