This is clearly a work in progress. It's my first track as well as first post here on the forum. I'm looking to put in my first drop right at the end of this but I'm having a little trouble deciding how I want to do that and what I want it to sound like. I tried experimenting with some massive bass patches I created but I'm having a little difficulty getting it to automate smoothly and to transition from the more traditional electro feel into the dubstep mindset. Suggestions?

First track ever? Nice job man. I wish you could hear my first track ever. It was waaaaaaaay shittier than this. Then again, this was before VSTs and when FL studio was just FL, but whatever. Props man.

First off, I'm a big fan of the trance dubstep mix. I love the cheese mixed with the grime.

I really like what starts at 0:45. The modal switch is really neat.

As to your questions: I'm not sure you are asking the right ones. No one on here can really tell you what your drop should sound like, or even what we imagine it to be, because, well, the possibilities are endless, and only you know what kind of sound you have floating around in your head. What I would do instead is go ahead and make something, then post it. The questions that people can answer on here are more about production quality, eq, and compression, and maybe voicing, too.

About automation: which programs are you using? that would make it easier to help with automation. What did you want to automate? what have you been trying that hasnt been working?

First off thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it. I'm a graphic designer so music production is kind of new to me, but so far I love it, I keep procrastinating on my homework and commissions to work on developing my sound, haha.

I'm using ableton Live 8 and I was trying to modulate the LFO synch Rate (In Massive) as well as the pitch to try to make a thick, grimy drop, then into a bass flow.
I guess what I was asking was if I should keep the sound to the "atmosphere" (I guess I'll say) of the first part or add more variation and make it grimmier and more robotic sounding, because everything is kind of trance-ish, I suppose.

This is yet again all up to you, it could go in infinite directions. It could keep the atmosphere and open up into huge subs with a minimal feel, or it could drop the atmosphere and be all raunchy distorted synths and loud formant wanking, or you could keep the atmosphere and cho up bits of a lead and a vocal ample pitched to be melodic to get that electrostep feel that is oh so popular right now.
