Re: Am I completely nuts?
Hey sure man, I could write pages on this stuff, had to before lol, but really there are a ton of good books on the subject. After the all time best seller and phenomenon that is Hawkings A Brief History of Time, the one book that got me hooked on physics years ago (and specifically the unbelievable world of the quantum) is Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe. All of his are good but I'd def recommend that one and after that also The Fabric of the Cosmos. He does a really good job explaining things for laymen and professionals alike and he is actually one of the most well known string theorists. But I would def read up on quantum first as atring theory builds upon it. Have fun and prepare to have your mind blown and your eyes opened!

Re: Am I completely nuts?
we should totally turn this into a religion, with the string theory stuff and all that. our children will get oscillators on their 6th birthday and will be trained in the art of shaping waves n shit and there will be group meditations and sound temples where people meditate on rhythms and the relations of wavesManic Harmonic wrote:YES.hasezwei wrote:ive had this thought that everything can be described as waves and that by learning how to harness the waves you can control reality. since the dawn of man music has always been about the mind controlling the waves, instruments being only the means to do it. by controlling the waves more and more intuitively, to the point of meditation during the act of making/playing music you reach a certain mindstate that gets you closer to enlightenment/full understanding of the universe.
i couldn't further think about it because my boss told me my break was over and i had to go back to selling fastfood to people

Buddhism: "The height of human achievement" IMO.
In the 70's they did tests on some Buddhists. submitting them to doses of LSD, before LSD became classed as 'Illegal' (because a population of 'awake' people would be of serious concern to the demon spawn tnucs running shit right now). The Buddhist's classed the experience as 'mild'

Been a Taoist for the last 6 years. The universe is a mandlebrot fractal. True story.

Re: Am I completely nuts?
Oh and to answer your other question, in a sense yes, that is sort of what string theory implies, but quantum laid the ground work and initial mathematical premises for this. Those books above will cover the whole progression and important ideas in each sub-discipline without the need fo any advanced Mathematical pre requisites and im pretty sure you'll enjoy them in their entirety. Also the above poster is actually quite correct. Any phycisict who has also studied philisophy and religion will tell you the eastern philosophies such as Taoism have come closest to true perception of the natural world as it really is, not how we perceive it to be from our limited pov. Another great book for the above poster and any one else interested is The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra. Excellent analysis and equally life changing work.

You explain very well asterik! I have been super interested in quantum and everything around it for a long time, it becomes so deep it is more like philosophy than anything else, all you can do is dream.

Re: Am I completely nuts?
Another interesting fact that I believe is what makes music a fundamental human obsession is how tempo frequency relates to our subconscious mind. Typically alpha waves (energy emitted by our brains during extreme relaxation
) have a frequency of around 10 Hz. And tuning into these frequencies is believed to be what our ancient ancestors did in order to induce trance like states, usually with percussion in drum circles (hippies lol). So it's interesting that actually at our "preferred" tempo (140 bpm) converts by a factor of 16 to around 9 Hz. And also in light of this it would seem that, due to similiar tempo and the perpetual 4 to the floor, trance is called trance for a reason haha!

Only joking though, It's a gift more than anything, I'd LOVE to see the colors that music makes... very jealous of you good sir.
Maybe we all see odd things where we don't realise it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Re: Am I completely nuts?
Thanks for the compliment bruv. Had to teach undergrads this semester so maybe i picked up some abbreviated skills along the way, lol. Also sorry, i took this topic way off the map but i think we are mostly like minded, us producers, and its interesting and fun nonetheless. But the end of the day absolutely all the things we perceive, real or not, are simply the result of electro-chemical signals and their subsequent reactions interpreted by our brains. So who's to say what is real, or normal? And for that matter, you all, and even the universe itself may merely be a figment of my wild imagination. No way to ever know for sure really
Random trippy thought while we're on the subject thoughthough: I've always wondered what a person who is born deaf and blind dreams of. I can only assume it would be random tactile sensations at the most, them not ever having experienced the other senses to reference, but if so how could they ever really know the difference between the two? And if somehow, spiritually or otherwise, they could dream of sights and sounds (which i highly doubt is possible) I can only imagine the dream world would have to seem like reality to them. Hmm..

Re: Am I completely nuts?
Yeah I saw a special on the Science Channel years ago about a British guy who had this to the extreme and it made him a savant. Basically he could memorize anything (languages, numbers) he even recited pi for like 8 hours straight without 1 mistake. He could also do complex mathematical problems in his head. They found out that his brain was actually writing algorithms and such to solve the problems without him being conscious of it and he would know the answer because he would "see" combinations of colors and shapes in his head. So basically his brain was a calculator that automatically solved the problem and all he had to do was interpret the colors and shapes he associated with them. Amazing gift.Artie Fufkin wrote:You know, if you stab a man in the dead of winter, steam will rise up from the wounds. @asterisk: I think I saw that exact program one time. I'm so jealous lol I get basic computation mixed up sometimes :S
haha have you ever tried to think of a color that you've never seen? I've tried and it's impossible. I think color theory has pretty much got colors figured out.
...but! How would anyone know if two people were seeing the same colors? Sure we could both say trees are green but who knows if we really are seeing the same thing?

If you`re color blind then it`s even more pronounced.

Re: Am I completely nuts?
Well technically, the answer would be no. The key here is what differentiates one color from another, and that is the specific wavelength of any particular electromagnetic wave (light) that enters our eye. The EM spectrum ranges all the way from Radio to Gamma in terms of wavelength and how energetic they are (freq Hz), with visible light being only a small fraction of the entire spectrum. So by manipulating the wavelength of light you can cover the whole range, and even combinations, of color. What happens is when light waves interact (collide) with matter, depending on what the atomic structure of the matter is, some of the energy of the original wave is absorbed and it's either reflected or refracted after the collision (think of a water wave hitting a sea wall). If it then enters our eye, we process it as suchManic Harmonic wrote:Ive also wondered if there are colors that haven't yet been discovered

Re: Am I completely nuts?
..also adding to the EM spectrum above, concerning the higher wavelengths and thus higher energy (Hz) of visible light: the waves interact with cells in our eyes (matter) just as they do any other object, colliding with those cells after passing through our "lense" which focuses the input on them. So the cells are akin to our "film", with any absorption of energy altering their states and in turn our perception of their source (its color, ect).. Which is precisely why the higher end of the visible spectrum (higher frequency of light = more energetic just to beat a dead horse) for instance sunlight, literally burns our retinas and, at the very least hurts like hell, or at the most can permanently destroy those cells.

Re: Am I completely nuts?
I have some sort of form of Synesthesia.. where various pitches are represented in my head by specific colors. I don't exactly "see" the colors per se, but rather, I "feel" the colors and know they are there.
What's odd is that strictly speaking, I don't have perfect pitch (my brother does, but I just have a well-developed relative pitch). However, when I focus on on the colors I sense in my head when I hear pitch, I have an 80-85% accuracy rate.
For instance, to me - D is blue, E & F & F# are all differing shades of green, G is gray, A is white, B is red and C is orange.... so if I hear something in C (major or minor), usually I get a feeling of "orangeness", even without knowing that what I am hearing is in C.
