Re: am i wasting my time?
Ask yourself what you really want, mate. If you want to make podcasts with your friends and have a laugh then no, you're not wasting time. If you want to be heard and make a name for yourself, then you probably are. Everybody and their nan has a podcast these days.
hope this helps, or I will have wasted my time.

sorry im just tryin to harden u up matey.
dont worry wot eople think etc. do ur own thing even if its weird etc.
you anwsered your own question in your post tho srlsy. if you are looking for recognition you gotta do something original and really well and even then might not get noticed. im sure some bros appreacited ur mixes - but its a crowded field!
make them for yourself with a specific agenda and present them nicely and take care then put them away ad in 10 yrs time you will appreciate the effort and time you put in.

This. I see so many mixes nowadays where the tracklists are basically the same as 100 other mixes. Gotta make your stuff stand out. Speak to producers you rate on soundcloud, see if you can grab some stuff off them. Obviously I'm not saying you should just go and ask Boddika for a copy of 'Swims' or 'Acid Jackson', but spend your time digging around, get some stuff that not everybody else is playing. The way I look at it is, why would I listen to a mix full of tracks I already have on vinyl and digi that I could listen to whenever I want? Just my opinion, but I would rather a mix be a source of new music than just hearing tracks I've already heard a million times before.incnic wrote:if you are looking for recognition you gotta do something original and really well and even then might not get noticed. im sure some bros appreacited ur mixes - but its a crowded field!
If you can't get your hands on some dubs, then dig around and see if you can grab some older stuff/stuff from outside of dubstep that will work well in the mix, again, just stuff that will make you stand out, if you're mixing a bit of deep house, smash a disco tune in there etc.
Present it well, it might be a tad superficial, but it's always good to have a way to catch the eye of people just passing by with a bit of artwork. Unless you're a top name/producer/trusted source, people might just ignore your mix, but put a bit of artwork with it, something that might try and get your vibe across. Doesn't have to be a long thing either, just something simple (for example, check the artwork for the mix series from my blog, I get producers, etc. to make guest mixes. Check it here.)
Just look no further than Incnic's mixes (hopefully one coming soon for Night Tracks people!). The artwork that comes with them is sick, and caught my eye in a thread that I usually just scan through at top speed. Since I listened to his first one, I download all his other mixes as soon as they come out, because it's well mixed and it's mostly full of tunes I've never heard before.
I'm repeating myself, but I can't stress enough, find a way to stand out from the crowd and stuff will pick up.

Obviously its all worth it if you enjoy it.
I wouldn't care too much about soundcloud comments, its seems a bit of a 'give a comment to get a comment thing' for a lot of people. Some really good and popular artists on there with hardly any comments (some Ian Pooley tracks I was just listening to have been uploaded for weeks and have 0 comments, similar with Lohan from search and destroy). Wheras some really shit amatur producers (I won't mention names!) are completely full of comments, think it depends on audience quite a bit - the younger lot (usually more of the filth type stuff) treat it a bit like pokemon or something for collecting followers and comments. So I don't think its really that much of a guage for how good or popular stuff is.
Although if you aren't getting any listeners then perhaps its worth thinking why: are you any different/better than others? is it down to the stuff you do or how you are getting it to people? -perhaps soundcloud isn't the best method.

Re: am i wasting my time?
I have almost never left a note on soundcloud. I don't even know my password anymore. I use it almost daily, and judge/book/push projects a lot thanks to it. If you're getting hits you're doing something right. Just keep on doing your thing and do a little promotion. But keep in mind some of the relatively known acts got tracks that don't even get 1000 listens, so your first podcasts, 1, 10, 100, should be all good.
Actually if your podcasts picked up more than a thousand hits I'd rather ask myself questions
And frankly most comments are not really constructive. If anything, they're in the way of my 'fast forward' function

Re: am i wasting my time?
If i was you i wouldnt care about soundclound comments on downloads but i can see where your comming from. its one of the promblems with the internet that theres to much crap on it. i rember zomby saying in a interview that there is no filter anymore and pirate radio used to be that filter. Also dj and records labels get sent loads of mp3s every day so its luck if they check your tunes you sent them. If you want to make dubstep you are up against the best and not eveybody can make tunes like mala loefah or burial. this may be wrong but i read a interview with skream and him saying that he wanted to dj garage but EZ had just perfected it .And maybe dubstep is getting like this. But if you like doing what your doing then keep at it. If you what your tunes to get notice maybe try the old ways like gettng your tunes on vinyls it will cost more but show to people you believe in your tunes or simple burn a cd and send it to a record label. How Mike skinner got notice. Using the internet these days wont get you as noticed as it use to.

i'm collecting money for a vinylrecorder and want to start my own thing. having my tunes on vinyl is all i'ld want. my music will find it's ways to be heard in smallest quantities. but whatever, thats good enough.
Re: am i wasting my time?
the podcast is nowadays just one weapon in the armoury, but it is a given that u do it, people almost "expect" it, u gotta be truely commited to the cause, and be able to consistently produce releasable tracks, that have a signiture sound but all moderately different...in order to build up a realistic profile.

Re: am i wasting my time?
so overall ur not wasting time, but u have to be patient, i only recently started producing properly in the last three months, but i got signed, so it is possible, admittedly the label isnt fucking amazing, but its a start and im happy with my progress...
