It sounds like two synths layered together. The main pad and a synth with a plucked string sound and some delay.

Try a pitch envelope. Put an envelope on your pitch and mess with the ADSR there. A fast attack and decay should get you on your way

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster. I've got a request from a strange source, the Portal 2 Soundtrack. Not dubstep, but these sounds just perplex me.

No specific part, just the entire song, really. Wait until the drums come in though. Obviously there's tons of gating and muting all over the place there, sounds like each track has it's own gating going on. My real trouble is those synth noises, I'd really love to learn how to make something that sounds that mechanical, yet distorted. I've tried Bitcrushing, S/H, Several different types of distortion, combining all of the above, and I can't get anything to sound as robotic and nasty without tons of bitcrush artifacts or fuzzy mud everywhere.

Thanks for any help.

Kill Humans Bass

Post by narrator » Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:24 pm

I dont normally post these sort of threads but i can stop listening to the bass in this tune, it's so thick yet so clean.
It just sounds so brutally hard (excluding the sub) but not too harsh.

Anyone have any ideas about approaching this sound.

Hey,

Currently working on a new tune. I have sub bass using an overdrived sine wine, compression/limiter etc, mucking around with different amounts on the ADSR also. I've got quite a big sub bass but when comparing it to songs by Skream and Truth, it's nothing.

Does anyone have a good recipe for sub bass like these videos? Thanks in advance, I appreciate any feedback I get :)

I'm not completely sure.

Try 2 over-driven saw waves, with the pitch down to -24.

Have a third oscillator with Modern talking or even gentle talking, with the amp a little big higher than the first two osc's. Try pitch it to 6+.

Add distortion with an external effects plugin like CamelCrusher, apply it in small volumes. Mix up the distortion plug-ins you use, try out other bit-crushers like IzotopeTrash, adding them in small amounts slowly, gives it a different sound than just adding big amounts on.

Sorry if this didn't work, that's just where I'd start :)

I just got a pretty good one using a lowpassed square instead of a sine, same treatment as before with lots of saturation (FerricTDS is good for this), then LFO to cutoff and EQ to taste. I boosted mine at 50 hz and 500 hz and shelved it off at 1k. The compression and saturation are the key to that sound so play with the settings until it sounds really good. If you want the harsher sound like in the first track add some light distortion.

sweet. thanks for the suggestions. I tried to layer some sounds and I can see how that may work.

sparxy-- i think that may be a great idea. but, currently, I don't seem to have a plug-in that can do this. the only oscillator i have is Vacuum on Pro Tools 9. I think if I can get my hands on something, this may be the way to go.

thanks everyone.

I'm looking to replicate the sound @ 0:58 in Massive.
I've been trying already for a while, but I can't seem to get it.
Can anyone help?

I got something similar by using the wavetables Drive 1 (wt position half way), Crusher (wt position 3/4ths to the right) and square-saw 1 (saw side), daft filter with resonance about 1/3 the way up, ramp LFO on filter, classic tube, dimension expander

Post by Skratch » Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:53 am

Runaway is the best i can explain it... but its where it sounds like the bass is drifting away in reverb.. examples:

Reverb, less lfo?

Bass is just standard sines and squares I would have thought, if you mean the low end- higher leads I heard are dutuned saturated square/saw waves but that's clutching at the recesses of my mind. I know saturation was involved. There's people on here that make purple so no doubt theyd be able to help you better :D

yeah, its reverb. try a small room size, lots of diffusion, but a short decay time. and more wet than dry.

Excision - X-Rated WTF!!! = distorion?

Post by nezvers » Mon Oct 03, 2011 3:35 pm

Each time I try to get more and more distorted woble to the limit it is relatively sound not noize. But when I heard new Excision... that just made me to lose jaw!!!
Listening to X-rated album I heard something like distortion in several songs but I just don't get what give that meat! Sound like shitload of distortion but isn't loosing sound definition!
