Drum programming in logic?

Post by Tiger Blood » Thu Oct 06, 2011 7:34 pm

hey guys

im learning logic and im using ultrabeat samples for my drums,

After picking my samples i go into full view to write the pattern, im having issues working out what the timings are on the grid?

Im coming from FL studio so 1 block is 1 beat, so its easy to know that each 4 beats is another section and put the clap on the 3rd set of 4's if that makes sense.

But in logic it like 1/16 by default and im not used to working with these settings so im not really sure what it means and what goes where?

also when i change down to 1.8 for example the samples seem to play a little longer, on 1.16 they sound clipped off.

Anyone able to help me work this out? I just want to be able to tell more easily where to place my beginning kicks and claps before i mess around with pattern etc.

Look at the bottom of your arrange page where you have the play and record buttons, that is called your transport panel i think lol
Anyways if you look along where the tempo is beside is the time scale of the track should be 4/4 under that should be /16 if you drag that up and down it will change the grid size.Watch the grid as you do it and you will get the idea.

I see what you mean but im talking about the sequencer within ultrabeat, those controls adjust the main sequencer.

Ahhhh sorry, well dubstep patern would be kik on 1 snare or clap on 9 i think. The sequencer in ultrabeat is basicly 2 bars when set on 1/16.

so 2 squares = 1 beat on 1/16?

so then 8 squares = 1 4 beat bar?

and so on?

how come the sounds are clipped can i spread them across 2 squares?

Yes when you click and make the little blue block grab the side of it and drag it out.

Also yes 1-4 is one beat 5-8 is 2 beats and so on,thats in 1/16 anyway work it out in that then you should be able to make sense of the other grid settings.

Say you press number 1 and the blue block appears underneath it,you grab that.Just put your cursor at the very edge and drag to the right.

Actually just noticed if you point your cursor to the side of the blue block and look it darkens the very eadge that you can drag out.You can also do this at the top of the blocks to adjust velocity.

Sorry for being a bit sporadic in my replys i am watching a film,by dargging the sides of the blue blocks out all you are doing is increasing the release of the samples it is triggering so you can just set ultrabeats envelope to do this for you which is probably as easy to be honest.

Yeah where you have velocity/gate that blue block there, grab the edge and drag right to increase release. Is this what you are after?

to be honest im pretty lost now, none of these blue blocks can be dragged out in the ultrabeat sequencer from what ive tried, the only draggable thing is that big blue box at the bottom. all that happens when i drag a blue square in the sequencer window is it makes more of them which just makes more of the sounds rather than lengthening the existing samples.

You cannot drag out the blue blocks in full view window,i'm pretty sure what your saying is when you change the grid size it adjusts the release of your samples am i rite? The reason this is happening is because it also changes the release time on your samples in the velocity/gate window at the bottom of massive. All you need to do is drag the the blue block in the velocity/gate window out to the right.
I hope this isn't baffling you to much.

No just learn the envelope in the bottom right hand corner and your problems will be sorted.
