The "crumbling" clap/snare...

it's the same clap twice, one has been pitched down, there's panning involved aswell. edit: it might not be the exact same clap but it's fairly similar, pitch one down anyway....

This might sound weird, but step on a branch and record the sound of it snapping. Layer that with a clap or two, and voila. I read somewhere that Eskmo does this. I've tried it myself, and honestly, it's pretty close to what you're trying to do. You might be able to find branch sounds on freesound.org if you don't have anything to record with.

nice one, thanks guys... yeah i actually tried leaves crunching and stuff on freesound before i posted this, i've been trying for ages but can never get it to sound quite right, the pitching is definitely a good idea

Try recording or finding some sounds of biting into crunchy food. You can get some super crunchy sounds with an interesting attack and decay. Like the sample in the song below, which is one of my favorite snare samples(if you can even call it a snare). I love the way it moves around the mix while its playing.

i'm all into lo-fi, and it's a lovely piece of music, really is, but that production is bordering on crap...

i'm sure the next big thing will be recording onto a dictaphone...in a shed.

get a field mic and stand on snail shells, and normal shells

if you're on Ableton, i like using Clapbox from Pure Magnetik (get that here: http://www.puremagnetik.com/index.php?o ... Itemid=217) which is a free live rack! you can then strap on a grain delay with the delay time set to around 30-50ms and the spray and frequency parameters in the first third of the slider, and play around with the wet/dry...automate tohose parameters slowly for an evolving tone

@knell- check out the sound kit from Drake's producer that somebody posted. He has a good snare in there made from layered claps that sounds similar to the one used in that track you posted.

I found a couple good crunchy samples on freesound.org:

If anyone else has found any good samples on freesound or recorded their own and is willing to post them here it would be much appreciated. Im going to be doing some field recording in the woods later so I'll be able to post some of my own tonight.

First answer is the best one. Just layer some claps and put one slightly behind and some slightly infront to taste. Don't need to stand on branches or shells unless you are really going for that super natural sound.

The Amon Tobin sound has some lead in and lead out in the crumbling sound. I'm sure you could get something cool by layering any number of impact elements and texture elements. The other way to a really crumbly clap is a grain delay. Short delay time, medium feedback, spray and grains to taste. Instant crumble!
