Is this a good idea?

Post by Zakhopper316 » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:18 am

Hey guys.
In return for playing the drums on my friends personal rock album for free he has offered to let me use
The studio he works at for a 5 hour day at no charge (studio drummers don't come cheap) and I'm thinking
About recording some loops/sample to release for free to use as a promotional tool. They will be really high
Quality and unique for sure but I'm wondering do people look for this kind of thing? Would u consider using them?
I'm thinking this is a good idea but I may be way off..also

What sounds should I go for? More realistic drum sounds or put them through some heavy processing?

What should be the middle or recorded tempo for the beats?

Should I do more loops or single drum samples?

Thanks, I know that's alot of questions but any help is appreciated!

For dubstep, probably single hits, but if you've got 5 hours you might want to do some breaks. I'd keep the processing to a minimum and concentrate on unusual patterns, odd ball kit (use a cookie sheet for a cymbal, cowbells, tambourines) whatever you can think of to give the breaks an original feel. And I wouldn't worry to much about tempo, if it's a dope break people will figure out how to get the tempo they need with ReCycle or something similar.

hell yeah that's a great idea! I agree mostly single hits. Some loops for beat slicing is cool too.
It would be really great if you had unprocessed and processed stuff both if you have some really cool analog stuff to treat the drums with, since a lot of us don't have that.
A lot of different tuning styles/muffling/no muffling/techniques(rimshot/hitting in the center/hitting off center and close to the rim)/sticks, brushes, whatever is available.

This would be really cool.

Grooves and breaks and stuff would be ace! As said above, drum hits can be found online, unless you have an exceptional drum kit in an exceptional room, then do a few single hits.

I'd be happiest with unprocessed, but that could just be me!

Thanks everyone! Yes the studio is really top notch it's here in NYC and the kit is really beautiful, the kick drum with shake ur sub without any EQ. When u say breaks do u mean like drum and bass break beat stuff? Sry I'm abut new to this. Also does file type matter? As long as the hits equal beat value it can just be audio file right? O should I make them into midi sounds?
Also how's the best way to release em? File sharing sight or something?
Thanks guys I'll be sure to give u all the samples to use if you want them.

nonsense , one-shots are abundant and free and everywhere.

BREAKS !!!! any tempo
2 or 4 bar loop + a variation or two
SYNCOPATED FILLS at 140!!!

shit would be really really cool. If the recordings come out good, i would be happy to donate for your freebie cuz this is the type of thing i need. CBA to record my own drum kit properly, i'd need to buy like six more preamps. not to mention the mic's.. just can't do it.
lets hear em!

Or maybe 2 tempo's per loop, one slower tempo at like 70-90 bpm and one at like 140-160 bpm.

BREAKS!!!!

Any one can wack it into a sampler and get the single hits out of it, its all about capturing the vibe of a live player and manipulating it to how we want it played.

P.S - video in your sig is sick!

^this! 100% this! One shots and loops are a dime a dozen, but a whole pack of fills would be memorable man, your name might get as well known as vengeance essential lol. "zakhopper fills." I can see it now :h:

Also, you're going way above an beyond, do you have a paypal for donations or something? I'm not loaded or anything but if a bunch of us send you a buck... :W:
