two people want to arive at point B from point A

two routes A1 and A2

both routes are 3miles long

x wants to go A1 route, y wants to go A2 route

the difference in length between the two routes is.... the same

:Q:

''could care less'' is the american thing thats kinda the same as above but genuinely means the opposite of what they try to say
Yeah, but surely 'same difference' should then just be 'the same' or 'no difference'. In the example you gave, 'same difference' actually makes sense, but people usually use it to say something they mistakenly said is the same as what they meant to say.

exactly- in this context, when there is a measurable difference, it makes sense. 'Same thing' sounds better and is foolproof..

that being said, thank you noam for providing a valid explanation for once, noone else has ever come close

that's the point ... when one says "X, Y, same difference", the use of the nonsensical term "same difference" makes the assertion that X and Y are the same into obvious nonsense, which makes the statement ironic, implying that X and Y are in fact different.

[quote="noam"]

the difference in length between the two routes is.... the same

how can the difference between two things be the same, there is only one difference, the difference between the two lengths is one value. or if you mean they are both the same length, then there is no difference in length, they are just both the same, no difference.

If it wasn't for urban dictionary I wouldn't have a clue what any of you ones are on about.

I imagine you would all hate the word 'craic' if you came over to Ireland. It essentially means the same thing as banter and is overused so much, but I use it all the time so I can't complain. A few Norn Irish phrases and words that piss me off are Get her bucked, Pure beaut, Mankin, Melter, Yolk (meaning house) and Scundered. There are so many bloody awful sayings in these lands.

nah mate whenever someone says 'same difference' to me they are implying that whatever is being compared has such a little difference that they can be considered as the 'same', not to be 'ironic', that's why they look stupid (also if someone was trying to be ironic they would still sound stupid)

ok ... well, my explanation is the only reason i'd say "same difference" (& it is deliberately being silly); i can't speak for everybody ...
