Make A Beat in 10 Minutes...

Post by wub » Thu Oct 13, 2011 5:25 pm

Episode 1 - Swindle

Epi 2 - Noises - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY7I4-C- ... ure=relmfu

Epi 3 - Spooky - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKRRcMsW ... ure=relmfu

Rest of the series - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2pXVknk ... D3E4E0097E

Even if you don't like the beats, the workflow is impressive.

nice. very inspiring, just jamming it out straight. i mean he (swindle, havent seen the other ones yet) just used the sounds dry, no automation, no effects, no compression or anything and it already sounds gorgeous.
i mean ok its not possible to do crazy basslines or frantic idm-ish edit madness so quickly, but i'd rather buy the tune he made in these 10 minutes stretched to like... 4 minutes or so than something i spent several days or weeks on that might be technically complex but not nearly as listenable.

also shows that being able to play keyboard/piano pays off. definetly have to step up my game with that...

I think it helps to have a good solid bank of 'go-to' sounds for the start. What struck me is that he didn't spend hours trawling through drum samples looking for that elusive perfect snare or anything. Either he did some prep work prior to the video, or he just had his choice sound folder setup in such a way that he didn't need to waste time faffing with sample selection.

With regards to the bassline/melody bit, I loved how he was jamming and every now and again flicking the pitch wheel a little bit to get a slight bend, building the automation into the sound as he was recording it.

love that rhodes sound he uses. i like this kinda style.
last night i made a beat in about 15 minutes. a friend brought over a little mini USB keyboard, so I just plugged it into ableton and started jamming.. about half an hour of tweaking left me w/ this..

That inspired me to try to make a beat in 10 minutes. I've tried 3 times so far, and I keep getting better. Just have to work on my workflow ya know.

wow I am extremely impressed! What he did with the drums was really good, and I just realized how badly I need to get back into piano lessons.
...in my opinion

i think i'm gonna make a whole mixtape full of them, it's fun to be in the frantic kind of groove.

I think that type of workflow is best for me, otherwise I get way too caught up in how things should sound and stuff. Like if I try to make something really hard, I'm always like THIS KICK IS NOT HARD ENOUGH COME ON and spend like 4 hours on that and then trash it.

Would anyone be interested in having a competition for this? I think it would be fun, like an extreme version of the 48 hour XD.

It wouldn't be full tunes, because that's impossible, but it'd be just like 16 bar loops or 8 bar. Stuff like this:

Soundcloud

I don't know how we would know you made it in 10 minutes, but the honor system should work. There's no point in cheating on DSF comps anyway.

These are great.

They remind me of a practice I used to do... where every morning, before I even had my first cup of coffee.. I tried to sketch out an idea in 15 minutes before I had to take my boy to school.

I have no idea why I stopped doing that, cos the results were some of my best ideas. probably 50-70% turned into proper tracks later, and the others were cannibalized for other uses.

Super big ups to Spooky who looks like he is just using some computer at a community centre or something. No midi keyboard, tiny lil computer speakers... still rockin an ill beat.
