Just sample some R&B tunes. Like Mary J Blige, Whitney Houston etc...

Synkro does that a lot. The key is in the pitch. Drop the sample one octave and get that deep sound from it.

Not sure about Phaeleh, but I know Synkro (and burial sometimes) sample R&B tunes and mess about with the pitch. Pretty sure Everybody knows and Tell me by Synkro use Brandy samples, 95% sure anyway...

In the song Alicia, Mala sampled Alicia Keys' voice. Burial has said in interviews that he samples old r&b tracks imitating old garage tracks. Whatever's pleasing to your ears!

A good tip is to search soundcloud for acapellas, that's where i get a lot of my vocals from. That and from some r&b acapellas from youtube.

whosampled is really cool, lots of good info on there. the sample they have listed for "tell me" is wrong, though, i think...should be "angela undress" from the american beauty soundtrack, at least to my ears...just a pet peeve i wanted to mention, haha.

but yeah, as mentioned, both of these guys (and many others) use a lot of samples from r&b tunes. anything with nice, soulful singing.
