Vinyl or MP3

Post by amathew » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:23 pm

I've been collecting vinyl for the past 8 years, but recently I'm rethinking vinyl.
If I'm buying a new 12" for $10, I could instead get maybe five mp3's for $10. So
I'm left wondering if I've just been scammed for all these years.

For mp3/vinyl peeps, how do you justify what you buy?

I'd like to particularly hear for non-dj's who buy vinyl. I'm not a dj, just like
music. When I first got into music, i was into punk rock, and a lot of the
underground labels were only release albums on vinyl, so I had to buy vinyl
if i wanted to listen to it.

It's about dropping a track at the wrong speed, and it sounding better than the real thing.

Vinyl for me, I 'justify' paying for it by limiting how much I buy per month... quality over quantity. It means I only buy stuff I really like. I buy a lot of old stuff too a lot of which isn't avaliable digitally. If it was purely for listening purposes though and not mixing then I would get mp3s of new tunes

When it comes to older shit, I can definitely find good stuff by digging through crates. It's the newer stuff thats the issue.
I'm not mixing, just throwing it on a old 70s record player just to listen to some good tunes.

And when it comes to non electronic records, I have about 500 LPs and 200 7"s. They're mostly punk, hardcore, and
indie rock. While I love the music and my records, I wish I hadn't wasted so much money on records.

You're not making sense, you say you love your records but that you regret wasting money on them??

Well, I don't listen to punk or hardcore anymore, so I kinda do regret having a lot of records of a musical style which I don't listen to anymore.

Yes, but you bought those records when you were into that music so you can't say really that you wasted money on them.

Lol! Paying money for mp3s..... Aka paying for air. Holla at me if you think you harddrive will be around in 20 years.

Vinyl is phyical, touch, feel see, it is actually something. It has stood the test of time. It will be around forever. It is love, oh and they are worth something after you buy it as welll!

Nothing like getting some sweet artwork (although the white label has its own appeal), sliding it out of the sleeve, checking it in your hands and putting it on the decks, being able to hold something that somebody has invested a lot of money in, and I know I'll enjoy for years. Whenever people see my collection on my shelves, even the casual music listener is interested in it, they check it out, I can play them a few tunes I know they've never heard before. My friend is a big hip-hop fan, mostly commercial stuff, I played him some Joker vinyl after bringing the subject up, next week he's all over the Joker downloads  Nobody has ever once asked me what's on that little black block plugged into my PC.

I download a lot of stuff too, but mp3s and wavs don't have the same impact a physical, well designed piece of music and art has. It's expensive though, so I'm not here to tell anybody why they shouldn't have it, and I know there will be people that don't care, but the world would be a boring place if everybody just did what was the most convenient or easy thing to do.

What I have concluded is that you should never mix the love of music with money. They simply do not belong near each other. Buy something for the love of the music, the industry, and the people involved.
For me, I enjoy the emotions of anticipating my order to arrive then having the opportunity to physically unbox my disks. And with future DJing in sight, I love thinking about my first night when I can put a Mala tune on with my bare hands.

With digital, you get a file, on your hard drive, and are still left with the question, "why don't I just pirate?"
Because if you are looking to spend little to no money on music you most likely aren't worried about the music industry so why not pirate.

But that's just how I see it, and I could be wrong because I'm tired.
