Zale - Dark Star (Epic Dubstep)

Post by Zale » Tue Nov 01, 2011 8:44 pm

hey, so I've checked this forum out a couple of times and it looks like some people here know there shit. so i just finished producing a new song titled Dark Star. I was wondering if i could get some feedback. I just started working with Logic Studio, originally worked on garageband for the past few years and made some surprisingly tight productions with it, but up til just recently only listened to dubstep and haven't produced it. Check out my sound, and feel free to let me know what you think. I also experiment with drum and bass and hardcore, occasionally used to write hardstyle. bare in mind a lot of the tracks on there are from a year or two ago, but the 5 most recent ones are from the past two weeks. Oh yeah its mastered with skull candy earbuds, so bare with me. enjoy

I think there's a lot that is good with this track. I like the little melody that you bring in at about 0.30, the way you've used the break beat at the beginning and in the breakdown and the background choir-type melody. It sets a good atmosphere. I am not so keen on the drop, that's not to say it's no good, I'm sure it would work well in a club (although possibly a good idea to add some sub/increase the level of the sub) and it's potentially a personal preference thing. It's just that as the drop came in, I realised I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen, but I think think that instead you could probably build on the really encouraging start and do something unique rather than what seems to be a text-book dubstep drop. I would have liked to see you really build on the melody for one thing as that has lots of potential. I hope that helps a bit!

thanks. I'm not really pushing for anything unheard of, i like the sound of mainstream dubstep so I guess thats whats coming through in my tracks. jeanblanc, i like the production quality of that track, i don't like how the levels on the instruments are low. I'm assuming you were aiming for a more ambient sound so if thats the case then good job, i'm a fan of tight heavy kicks and snares with big reverb. i can see the creativity through that song though and i think if you tweaked the instruments it'd be real tight. Im thinking about writing a song in G next, i've always used D for some reason.

Some cool sounds mate, like the drums actually. im amazed you used Garageband for so long. Not being ignorant but i have only looked at it a couple times and looks pretty lame compared with Logic Ableton Reason Pro tools Fl etc. but fair play. n you actually got a pretty good gritty wobble sound for someone that aint really being Dubstep for so long.

Props to you sir

Melodies are really nice. Love the choir sounds. Nice use of an amen. Drums could be beefed up a bit.
