Tips For EQ'ing Bass Without Clipping

Looking to get a solid deep sub bass line without it overlapping the rest of my sounds. To give you somewhat idea of the smoothness I mean, listen to this Adroa track. Ignore his wobbles and sound FX and examine his sub bass, so perfect... yeah trying to reach that.

Depends what you're using to make your subs?

A lot of soft synths Ive used play more frequency than they -should- when making straight sine subs.


Do a narrow EQ taking out everything above 80hz.

Filter out 80hz on everything other than your sub and it'll fit and be boomy.

Preventing clipping for low ends is much more related to dynamics control than EQs. For sure suppressing the bass also suppresses the problem. But is it realy what we want?

Of course, but don't get me wrong you'll want to hear a deep bass but clear sounds as well. Listen to the example in the Adroa track up above.

It's just basic EQing technique mate. Like legendary said, all you do is lowpass your sub at 80 or 90 hz and make sure nothing else in your track is dipping that low either, for example highpass your mid bass at 100hz.
You said you don't want your sounds overlapping, well stop them then by seperating their frequency ranges! simple

Clipping is a different problem usually. Clipping is when the gain of a sound is going above 0db, effectively "squaring" off the wave. If this is happening it probably just needs to be turned down. But to be honest if you haven't EQd it at all then you should

most subs in professionally mastered EDM have harmonics. rarely, if ever, is there a plain sine wave for the sub after mastering.

but do what they said, and also mess with some saturation before your low pass in the signal chain.
