I hope it's the last one of this kind tbh. I really want them to move to other countries/locations/cities. I think it's about time for them to allow international travel to other cities in game sooner or later. Something like Second Life, but GTA, where there's countless destinations. I would gladly welcome loading times to fly in game from one country to another. Seems like the logical next step from flying to other states in San Andreas.kruptah wrote:Never dat.signals wrote:is this going to be the last gta?

Re: GTA V
My guess is that it'll be the last until the next generation of consoles is announced. Rockstar take such a long time developing games, with good reasonwormcode wrote:I hope it's the last one of this kind tbh. I really want them to move to other countries/locations/cities. just went on gta 4 for a bit.
that game is so boring.

Re: GTA V
Wouldnt enjoy a GTA set in Italy or Brazil. Let games that wanna follow suit take up those cities.
The way Rockstar turn a real city like New York into their own carbon copy is what makes it. The uncanny-ness of NYC in GTA IV is class. I can guarantee Los Santos will be the same.
They could do a very good job on London but it has to be a city that the world knows or has a good knowledge of. I've been to NY once and from that one visit and other sources like TV ect I felt how realistic it was.
Do any of us really know what Rome is like? Rio Di Janero? Even Tokyo would be something id prefer it not to be although I could see the logic behind it.

Nobody has invented a technology which details maps for game designers yet.Trainrek wrote: judging by the speed at which games technology/technology in general are improving, we could have a game with the whole world in it
It's easy enough to replicate the street/building layout of a city using mapping software, but the level of detail which gamers have come accustomed to does not take 5 minutes to create.
Someone could re-create London like "The Getaway" did in about 6 months these days on a home computer by themselves. That'd require non-stop mapping and texturing every day for 6 months probably. Mapping the street layout of a city is no longer particularly impressive. Detailing that empty shell of a map is what takes time. NPC's wouldn't know where to walk until you pathed the map. Everything would be dark until you've done the lighting. Everything would be gray until you texture it. Everything would be silent until you add sounds. Everything would be glitchy until you've tested it.......etc etc etc etc
They started mapping for GTA IV before they even released San Andreas!
I just looked at the GTA IV credits. There's 'only' 24 level designers credited (I thought there'd be more) but I can guarantee they probably worked 10-hour shifts since 2003 in order to get GTA IV's maps looking this good.
Regardless of that, Rockstar will never set out to map 'the whole world'.
Even if they did, it'd be 'the whole world as interpreted by Rockstar'.
They didn't make NYC in GTAIV. They made Liberty City. That's the whole point of the franchise.
Mapping London or Tokyo would be one thing. Re-imagining and redesigning London, Tokyo, or any other city, is what takes 5 years of non-stop work and the biggest budget for a videogame ever

As far as I can tell, the only way we're ever going to get something close to a worldwide GTA-style game is once every single building in the whole world has been 3D modelled in Sketchup and put on Google Earth, and then imported in to some next open-source GTA-style game engine. It'd be cool, but I can't see it happening!

edit: btw i know that software advances at a fraction of the speed of hardware, but i reckon something like that will be developed within the next 10/20/30/40... years

Re: GTA V
^Yeah that's true.
I think it will be up to the modding community really. Rockstar's role in this would be keeping the game open and moddable. Game devs these days are just doing the opposite, and closing down modding options, which is just dumb and counter-productive. It used to be a case of a dev wanting their game to expand and reach new demographics through mods, but now quite a few just want to make one game, then make another one next year so they can charge another ridiculous amount for it. This is why Quake and Half-Life are still legendary. So much free content from the mod community that it allowed those games to live on past a decade.
If modding GTA were easier, I guarantee there would be new cities and total conversion mods. There have been some great mods, but it's tricky and buggy to implement stuff, especially without official SDKs or access to the code. The best was probably San Andreas Multiplayer which was only possible because the newer GTAs shipped with basic network code, just not fully implemented yet. In subsequent patches for GTASA they disabled a lot of it which broke the multiplayer mod, so it only works with SA 1.0

I don't doubt that a game with a map the size of Earth, with gameplay based around crime could exist within the next 50 years, but there's no way that something akin to the GTA experience could possibly work on this scale.
Look at the GTA IV credits. Nobody even has enough resources to even attempt a project like this. Not unless Apple teamed up with India, China and Rockstar to form the biggest software company the universe has ever seen.
Even just recording a similar amount of pedestrian voices as they used in GTAIV, for every city in the USA, would take from now until about the year 3011. By which time we wouldn't even be using .wav files any more so someone would have to spend another 2000 years converting all the wavs to some next format.
The modding community taking it on is a nice idea, but in reality about 99.8% of mods are never finished, and the idea of a worldwide GTA is about 10 million times the size of any previously completed mod, or even complete game, in history.
£10 says there are simply not enough nerds in the world for this to become reality

Anyway, for V, I just hope there's looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooads of property which the player can buy. And a more meaningful, challenging money system.
I thought the property buying in Vice City was pretty great til I'd completed it. If nearly every building in the game was purchasable (not enterable - that to me isn't a big deal) then people would still have something TO DO in 5 years time from now when they're still playing GTA V. I still rock GTA IV and San Andreas occasionally but since I've completed the missions there's nothing to actually do in the game any more apart from go on a rampage.
Vigilante mode needs to come back and be beefed up too. Although, having played LA Noire, I'd like to believe Rockstar are thinking the same thing!

Can confirm. In-n-Out is the best burger franchise of all time. Not been to California for 8 years so sometimes when I'm high I look at pics of those burgers and just yearn. It's torture.

Re: GTA V
Think I noticed quite a few cameos in the new trailer...I'm not gonna get too hyped up by GTA V yet though, in fact I think think going back to an old city is a bit lazy. Actually San Andreas is probably my least favourite.
Playing GTA III was the one for me, the transition from top down 2D to a 'breathing' 3D city will never be topped. I do prefer the theme of Vice City though, the first time you get in the car and Billie Jean comes on is amazing.

ridiculous step up, and the msx station was so refreshing at the time in a game....codebreaker shouting out to liberty city really made you feel at home in the game...tbf there isnt anything majorly huge in terms of gameplay theyve tweaked since gta 3 really when you think about it...however.....a massive variety of terrain and realistism is what i want from the maps in the next one.....hopefully red dead was them sorting out certain elements of natural terrain and thats gonna lay the groundwork for a less built up centric map with more realistic transit between locations...make it so getting a flight is far more appealing than even it was in but if you want to travel by car you can
