you get what you pay for in many things i agree...id love a pair or grado1000s or hd800s as ive no doubt theyre light years ahead of the kind of headphones i could afford and would allow me to enjoy music more at home, i just dont see how a coat does this for anything other than add something extra for someone that cares too much

yes the hypocrisy is there too an extent with the vinyl thing BUT i was and am embarrassed of how much i have bought and as a result stopped writing what i had purchased and it was my dirty little guilty secret...now i buy next to nothing..regardless vinyls are not comparable to a coat...i dont merely wear the vinyls while i walk down the street..in fact most people wouldnt even know if i span a vinyl rather than a digital file if they werent paying attention so even in that context its not as if the prestige involved is there for others and to improve my image...regardless instead of buying vinyl i now make my own music to play and get tracks of other people..i create rather than buy someone elses work

and equipment all performs functions and offer clear qualifiable features for each price point....some people have bigger needs than others etc...theyre there for professionals to buy...i dont see how someone is more of a professional coat wearer than someone else

to me gwa to answer your question there no because buying a coat for the same price as something practical relative to the pricepoint isnt the same thing as paying for relative to the prestige or look of the said item...having said that prestige and image do come into technology as well increasingly but word gets out and people buy other stuf..bose have fallen fast over the last few years for example

Fashion can be art, but generally speaking fashion is business. You're paying for added value and 'cool' factor.
Same as Macbooks, £500 audiophile leads, holistic medicine, glasses without lenses, bottled water, etc - most of the time what you're paying for isn't tangible, its all in your head.

Anyway, a PS3 is more like £160 brand new and it serves multiple purposes. Web browser, music player, DVD player, Bluray player, games console, media server, fashion/style accessory, etc etc. All a coat does is keep you warm and stylish. 4000+ year old invention.

Software is also a poor comparison. You pay £600 for Logic because you're compensating for the 95% of other people who warez it. If you could download a £300 coat, the price would go up to £3000 to compensate for the clothing warez scene. Also, you can learn things from software and use it to express yourself artistically. Short of buying a coat with a built-in encyclopaedia and guitar, clothes don't do either of those things. Not many bugs to fix with a coat either, and clothes tend to degrade in quality over time unlike software which isn't perishable.

Not at all, but the less you're willing to pay, the more time you're probably going to have to spend sorting through endless heaps of rubbish in order to find something worth wearing. I live with girls that can dress themselves to an acceptable standard for a music awards night by spending a day going round thrift markets, but I don't have the time - I'd rather drop a few hundred quid every few months (or maybe even less often than that, tbh... bit of a splurge in winter and one in summer probably) to get half decent clobber without spending my entire life having to think about it.

We all have our vices... but the urge to look good seems a lot more natural than many. I've never really understood why people stigmatise fashion so much... it's as if those who can't be bothered want to force everyone else to compete on the same playing field. It's not our fault you're an ape that's evolved for millions of years specifically to make snap judgements of people by appearance, as well as the empathy to understand others are doing this too yet you've somehow still managed to not give a shit about what you look like to them. That's your disability, not society's.

many choose to spend money on music, art, technology, whatever the fuck it is with sonic, visual or graphic design that is pleasing to them on an emotional level.
as soon as it comes to clothes people start getting judgmental because fashion is something stigmatized more--seen less as an appreciation of aesthetic qualities and more as a flashy statement of hipness and wealth--when really, just like anything else all you heads love, it's all about the details.


a simple cut or button or material or manufacturing standard should be worth just as much (and be just as subjectively perceived/respected) as all those special snares and b-lines that drove you to amass a record collection over the years. and if you spend a considerable amount of money on any kind of creative pleasure then it ain't really your place to talk... impracticality is relative and we all indulge in it.

look, this is gettin quite dry, but for now, you OBVIOUSLY work with computers a lot, thats your thing, you care about your... computer

to SOME people, caring about your computer, or your games console, or you ability to surf the web, is just nonexistant, you see that right - despite the benefits you may perceive by bein able to do those things, some people, just dont care...

SOME people, like spending money they've earned on clothes, clothes that are made of nice fabrics, clothes that fit well and last a long time, clothes that look good and make you feel good when you wear them, clothes that you can potentially pass down to your kids

my dad owned a Levi's market stall on a Bazaar in manchester in the 80's, i have LOADS of levi's stuff from then, i love it, i said about my mums family, my dad used to be a photographer, and do fashion photography, its something i understand to an extent, both its pro's and its con's, and its something i care about a bit, but not as much as say, music or film

Clothes aren't aesthetics primarily though. I'd hazard a guess that early man invented clothes when he was cold, not when he was thinking of something to do to make himself "feel good" or "pass down to the kids".

I honestly don't care how much you or anyone else spends on their clothes. It is unlikely to affect me. All I do know is that ALL the people I personally know whom are majorly hung-up and defensive about fashion/brands/labels/etc are shallow dickheads. On the flip-side, now I come to think about it, the most humble, interesting and kind people I know normally have 3 or 4 scruffy t-shirts and a hoody on rotation and they've got enough interesting shit to say that the thought of their clothing choice hadn't really crossed my mind until now.
