Would a vinyl-only Dubstep night...
Re: Would a vinyl-only Dubstep night...
real talk pistons!
agreed its all about the tunes and I don't care what people use as their medium, but for me personally, wax is where it is at.

Don't think you quite understood what I meant. What I meant was vinyl is of course rooted in the history of dubstep (I'm not an idiot or a noob), but isn't AS rooted in the tradition of the genre as it is in D&B / jungle. Meaning there are a lot of junglists (both professional DJs and fans) who are more reluctant to make the switch to digital, because everything was strictly vinyl for so long for those guys. When dubstep came out it wasn't long before digital began to dominate as the preferred medium, and so overall people are less bothered about the medium, at least this is how it seems to me. I didn't say this was a good thing or a bad thing, it just is what it is...charliefoy wrote:Probably one of the most fundamental rootsgarethom wrote:Not sure about that.rorz9992 wrote: But then again dubstep is a newer genre and vinyl isn't as rooted in the tradition of it...

I agree with most of the points on both side of the argument having played on vinyl but mostly now using serato. I still collect vinyl & love the sound. This whole thing about it sounding better on vinyl is pretty stupid though IMO. I understand liking the crackle on a record once its been battered on thinking when you can hear it that its gonna be a massive tune if someone is still willing to play it even with that damage to the plate. 1 last thing I bet that if someone played you a WAV on a CDJ or a brand spanking new dub you woudnt hear the difference...charliefoy wrote:Probably one of the most fundamental rootsgarethom wrote:Not sure about that.rorz9992 wrote: But then again dubstep is a newer genre and vinyl isn't as rooted in the tradition of it...
i had a residency that was weekly playing through a 20k rig for 18 months and you really can tell the difference...listen to distance - malice off wax through a big system and it will slay a wav on cd....you know you can export tunes from ableton at higher than a regular wav dont you btw? my tunes are all burnt as 24 bit 48khz wavs...i cant afford to cut dubs but im certain theyd sound way better than my 24bit wavefiles..
I used to have many people down to play with me and many people commented it was clear when someone was using cds..it just sounded a bit flat and lacking in warmth, body, depth....brightness...everything! why do you think mala was so obsessed with keeping dmz vinyl only for as long as he could?
granted 'some' people wouldnt notice the difference but any producer worth their salt would....look at dillinja and his approach back in the 94-96 days to vinyl mastering....his track 'deadly deep subs' was such a lethal cut with so much power and weight behind it that it blew many club soundsystems to the point where they even said to djs they couldnt play it....that track on vinyl with his mental approach to sub and power was responsible for clubs updating their soundsystems to the standard we have today..to be able to handle massive resolution and depth.....maybe dance music would have taken a less bass obsessed turn had vinyl not been the main format in thos days and the cds would have not called for it...im pretty certain the format played a huge part in dillinja realising his vision....in fact my copy of 'acid trak' first pressing split with lemon d on the flip is fucking dangerous too and has blown when played...my old hi-fi i had at home & my mates sub in his back garden during a dj set...the version on his cd greatest hits sounds totally lame by comparison and is almost a different song due to the format and mastering approach (the format calls for better mastering)
Vinyl is still the premium format
But in all honesty I don't care what someone plays on or how they choose to do it. Yes i know you can do that on Ableton but to be frank it's not something that bothers me. If I'm gonna rip a vinyl I'll do it in Audacity like the rest of Joe public with inferior hearing to you and everyone at your 20k rig set up. (which I'm guessing was the black sheep bar?) If you read my first post you would see I agree with you on most things but the fact is that the majority of people that go out A. Don't really care who's playing B. Don't care what format it it is and most importantly C. Could not tell u the difference between a WAV or a Dub.
If its good enough for Andy C & Youngsta...

Too many producers, not enough dj's.
Re: Would a vinyl-only Dubstep night...
we do a strictly vinyl night in Düsseldorf since nearly 4 years now. I absolutely love it and we have a great crowd of 100-130 people on a thursday night once a month.
I dont care about carrying my records around, I see it as part of the fun
but I think people don´t care which medium you play the tunes from.
true about the bookings: we are really struggling to get big djs over who are willing to play a vinyl set (big up to tunnidge, dj madd and darkside !)
true also about the DMZ cd rips. I hate it when digi DJs drop vinyl only releases (but that´s just me as a vinyl nerd...)
but yeah: DO IT!

didn't mean to come across as elitist..and also i don't rip vinyls i was referring to my own dubs mate...yes the sheep updated their system and it wasn't a handful of geeks....some guys that only used cds said they could feel and hear the difference as welldefoxster wrote:I knew someone would pipe up about my comments. I've gone over to cds a lot due to the tunes im sent and my own tunes, i just don't think you can brush aside the issue of quality so easily....its not just the resolution of vinyl...its how that affects mastering and what theyre capable of replicating...their warmth is unrivalled
I'm not talking about the majority of people, i'm talking about facts mate

there were moments where i got goosebumps at the sheep where we had a decent amount of people inside and i could the response the medium got, some cuts are incredible...the producer comes into it a lot as well
anyway peace didn't mean to offend i just didn't agree at all with what you said
