first be in a successful emo bandcloak and dagger wrote:how do I skrillex?
then feign an interest in electronic music and sign with the most mainstream label in a brilliant marketing ploy
also prance about acting like you can dj with ableton
Re: q and a or something like that
I like my workflow for the most part, but the way I produce allows me to be kind of lazy with the percussion section, doodling in breaks only as an afterthought. What can I do to keep from cheating myself out of more interesting percussion until it is too late?

that tends to be the first thing in my tunes
maybe its coming from a dnb and breakcore background, but drums should never be an afterthought
Re: q and a or something like that
How much drum do you write out, at the beginning? Usually for me its a two or four bar pattern that basically gets looped throughout the track.
I mean, do you make some change ups and then just apply them as you see fit, or do you actually write a song around the flow and structure of your percussion?

Re: q and a or something like that
drums and bass are gen the main part of my focus and the rest comes later
change ups etc come natural

Re: q and a or something like that
did you ever go through a time that you felt like you were getting better overall but in your opinion your tunes were shit to you? I feel like all my tunes are pretty shitty sounding while everyone loves them. I don't know if that's normal or not and if you experienced it before?

Re: q and a or something like that
I rarely post on the production forum, but always lurking as it's by far the best source of knowledge i've came across on the internet (if there's a better one please show me where!)
Remember hearing some of your stuff from a year ago or so and it was decent but it seems you've really taken your production/composition to another level now. So big ups on that
On the 3rd track you posted you seem to use some interesting gating/compression techniques. Can you divulge what you're doing there? Can't quite suss it out so would like to know how you have things routed etc...
Also, as someone who's got a shitload of production hours under his belt, is there anything you've learnt recently which has helped you up your game?
Cheers

Re: q and a or something like that
I'm working on a song, its the one in my signature and I'm really putting a lot of time and effort into getting the mix to sound good even on lame macbook speakers and I just want it to really sound professional because I'm trying to take things more seriously now since I really want to do this even professionally if I'm lucky.
Could I get some honest feedback on things so far? You could PM if you don't want to write it here.
Would be awesome man cheers

Re: q and a or something like that
What exactly is a re-fix, and what is the point of this?
Re: q and a or something like that
What did you use for your drums on Backwater Blues

Re: q and a or something like that
What genre of IDM do you think will be the next big thing, and blow up like dubstep has in this next decade. Or will there even be one?
Re: q and a or something like that
Is it normal to fall completely out of love with a track I was feeling after routinely mixing it for ages? Or is this a sign the track wasn't all that in the first place?
Re: q and a or something like that
yes, of course if u spend hours doing anything ur bound to become bored of its predictability but that doesnt mean its not any good, stick it on soundcloud, and let the people decide!
