question bout sub, bass layout & arrangement

hey all,

So ive been using a seperate sub bass rather than putting sub freqs on my wobbles how i used to. im just messin around with new techniques and what not but i was wondering which techniques do you guys and gals prefer? Ide just like to hear some of the responses so I can try varying things. I see the good and bad of both ways ha

Also, on arrangement of your sub bass. I know it goes in the drop (obviously) but Ill sometimes use it in the breakdown but other than that im kind of lost as to where good areas to have sub bass would be. I dont want my tracks to have too much bass as in not letting them breath. any advice on this question would be great

i'd also like to know more about this. i've listened to some tracks that sound like the sub bass isn't even part of the main(higher) bass, such as rednek's i'm not skrillex:





in this track, the sub is just a continuous note at times, yet the bass is going frantic. i'm guessing he added in the sub seperately, probably a dirtied up sine wave(to give it more harmonics).

a lot of people say they add in a pure sine wave, others like to add a filtered square or saw. depends on the tune in question i suppose. i'd be interested to hear how others do it.

a pro would be you can modulate the sub if it's seperate to your midrange synth/sound of choice. as of late i've used a template that expands on this idea, with an instance of albino as my main sub unit and an instance of kontakt with 4 blank internal modules routed out to 4 channels in ableton. this way i can take any sample and fuck it up with all the fx and modulation options that kontakt provides, and then when i'm satisfied enough with the sound, i'll put a continuous note down in albino, usually at c3, and go mad inside of the albino matrix. happiness ensues.
