Aight,

This is pretty much my first thread I think, so hi guys. Anyway, I'm a year away from leaving high school now, and am planning on doing a diploma in audio engineering + a degree in recording arts. I was just wondering if any DSF members have studied something similar to this? If so, how was it?

Id seriously suggest putting the money you'd otherwise spend on tuition into self education, the audio feild is not very impressed by diploma's, its a very experience based market.

Save money on tuition > buy some studio time and make good with the supervising engineer... Get your experiences and connections up.

Well, I live in New Zealand. Most of the studios here recognize diplomas from the SAE institute and are much more likely to hire someone with some sort of education rather than another. I was actually looking more towards the business side of things, hence the bachelor of recording arts - which is more research/market based. Thanks though!

i agree with basic A, all u need is a few books, you tube and ur setup to get going. if its an education ur after, get a proper degree, study something useful that can be ur plan b, and do music on the side. then when ur finshed ur degree, ull be in a better position to decide whether u want to pursue music as a full time occupation.

Ahhh, you're missing the point. Over here, the market is growing. I'm heading into the business side of things but I'm also doing a diploma in audio engineering because I can afford it, and the institute over here is great. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Our advice is to have a plan B that doesnt involve music, its just smart business to diversify yourself.

For the record i believe Experience > Degrees/Certifications any day of the week.

i did it (before i was interested in making electronic music mind you) and while i learned some things it was a huge waste of time. still paying it off and i learned more reading books and clicking knobs

i would hav ea fucking sick studio setup if i spent tuition on gear

hmm mixed results!

I really enjoyed going to college. BUT dont expect to learn how to produce dubstep there. That was done in my spare time. What I did learn however is to record properly and use hardware recording/playback rigs on big consoles and such.

So, if your interested in audio tech, go for it. If your doing it just for the sake of dubstep (or one specific music genre) DONT do it.

I hope you're joking lol 'if you're doing it for the dubstep'. I'm not that stupid, music has been my life - growing up. I've always been around it, came from a musical family.

I understand, I think I might look at other things as well. I mean, I'm still at school for another year, anything could happen.
I also have a scholarship for around $10K, all up it's gonna cost me $15K for the 3 years, so money isn't too bad. I don't wanna put the $10k too waste.

Well, if it's a 10k scholarship, not entirely sure if you can just cash that out and take the money, in which case definitely use it.

I can't believe all the people telling the OP not to try and get some sort of an education. We're talking 3 years here. He'll be 18 when he gets out of high school, 21 when he finishes his degree, assuming he doesn't go back to get a masters. It's not like he can't continue to make music in his free time either. So he'll end up spending 3 years not only learning on his own, but being taught other aspects of production by professionals, or at least people who know the professional side of things. I don't see the downside. Sure, he's going to end up spending 5k of his own money on it, but I mean what else would he use that on? If he didn't spend it on the school, he'll be able to buy a few decent pieces of equipment that he'll probably end up spending 3 years trying to learn how to use properly anyway, and none of it would really make him any better a producer.

I hear people say it on here all the time. "The equipment doesn't make the producer". After reading through this thread it's pretty obvious not everyone really believes that. Considering all the people telling him to forego knowledge and instead spend the money on new gear.

I'd say go for it. I've never gone to college for music, but if I ever had the chance and could afford it I'd probably go in a heartbeat.

They're right though, I dropped out of high school and got a cracked copy of Fruityloops instead, and I guarantee you there's no way I'd be manager at McDonald's if I had bought into that whole "education" thing.

I think you can cash some of it out, but I'd end up getting more money's worth if i went into education. Thanks heaps for your help man! I'll be 17 as well when I leave, I'm quite young for my grade.
