How did YOU learn to make dubstep?

Post by ScarletCyanide » Sun Nov 27, 2011 11:23 pm

Hey guy's, just wondering, what's your story? How did you start making dubstep and / or learning to? I think it could be interesting to know :)

I started just watching random youtube vids and i came across boyinaband. The was fairly cool as i got reason in college. But then i moved onto logic. Youtube is the best place to go I think cause its free haha. But yeah anything ya want to know just type it into youtube and most of the time there will be a vid on it. so yeah thats where i learned....

First heard stuff like Skrillex, then got into the real underground shit like Flux, Dr. P, Zed's Dead. It blew my mind, and I knew this would be my life. I got rid of all my other music and listened to UKF mashups for a month straight to prepare. Pirated FL studio (they should be paying ME for my music), got sick of all the complicated shit (What the hell is midi?) and signed up for http://www.dubturbo.com. Now I'm a wobble wizard; I got those wubs, womps, yois, whatever, yer all gonna be hearing my shit real soon.

I was browsing a random forum posting in a thread titled: "What song are you listening to right now", I was getting ready to post in it (at the time I wasn't even into any sort of electronic music mainly like punkrock and stuff), but the post right before mine was of this video:

I didn't even know what dubstep was at that point, I'd seen the word thrown around but didn't even know it was a genre of music, so I listened out of curiosity and was completely blown away. I had never heard anything like it before. After that video I got really heavy into dubstep, which eventually got me into all other genres of electronic music.

I thought about making a dubstep track for the hell of it... and I did... it was terrible, but fun to make. So I kept at it, kept practicing and I've got my method down.

I just kept trying and trying to make tracks like the tunes which got me into the sound.

Once I'd failed horribly at that and got frustrated at it I realized I learned how to do other things in the process and started making my own original music.

And just follow the same motto now.. I don't 'really' learn via tutorials or reading - I just think "hmm, how can I do this" and don't stop till I work it out.

...fractions

but seriously, i used to/still break the sound down technically more so than musically - in the first stages at least

I heard Caspa and Rusko-Custard Chucker and was blown away by the bass. A mate of mine provided me with some more dubstep, really deep shit. Then I started listening to brostep too, came over the Zeds Dead remix of Eyes on Fire, and that's when I decided to have a go. Downloaded the Fl demo, made a really bad beat with a wobble bass, thought about quitting since it probably wasnt anything for me, but then I got really positive feedback on the beat, and just made more and more. And here I am :)
