MACC is the F__king DON boss king of all things cool! His wisdom in the moneyshot thread opened my eyes so much and helped me get my shit sounding proper for reals!!!! Best part is once you start doing it, your mixes will ALWAYS be on point and you will always have headroom to play with, no more red overloading crap.

What I do when I'm producing anything is I turn my speakers just about all the way, some times actually all the way up, and I just make all the instruments peak at lower levels so it sounds like my speakers are at half volume. Note, I DO NOT MEAN TURN DOWN YOUR MASTER BUS. I DO NOT MEAN TO TURN DOWN YOUR MASTER BUS. NO. DO NOT DO THAT. What I mean is, I have my kick peaking at like -14 dB...

To get shit in line, I first do my kick. I put it around -14dB, or w/e level I want it at. Then, I get my sub. I level that where ever it sounds good, around 2 dB lower than my kick. Then I get my snare. I level that and w/e. Then I get my hats and shit and level those. I then EQ all of them to work with each other and not clash. Once I have the drums set, I have my foundation. From there I lay down everything else.

And another thing, DON'T NORMALIZE. To export my tracks, I used to record them with my recording tool and then normalize it and then save it. This actually was destroying the sound. If you want your track to be loud, you have to master it. Think of normalizing as "making it louder, the wrong way". Mastering is making it louder the right way.

here's a screenshot of the track thats in my sig just a few after the drop;

Image

the first channel is a closed hi-hat, the second is the main sub, the third is the top crack of my snare, the fourth my kick, the fifth the lead synth line, the sixth the bottom whoomp of the snare and the rest r just various FX and little shit like that. putting ur kick at like x db and ur snare at x db really doesn't matter, its just about finding a balance. read the moneyshot thred, mixing is more of an art than a science and u shud see the mixing board as more than a place 2 make everything sound right, mixing is one of my fav parts of producing.. you can make any sound work in a mix u just gotta be willing to compromise

i have a limiter bringing all the levels up on the master channel, but as u can c i mix subtractively (instead of boosting one thing i cut another) so i end up with my faders hitting a really low volume (this is also because i like to have lots of space on the master channel for some sweetening stuff).

btw limiters do not fuck ur sound up if u know how to use them. most times i use it it's just a volume knob basically, i never really like 2 let it even actually limit much beyond lil transients.

hope that helps sum

No-one mentioned it on this thread, but it's good practise to have your overall mix peaking at between -5 and -3 (that's what i aim for anyway). The mix should sound great, but a little quiet, if you export it straight like that but you also have enough headroom for gentle limiting without audibly messing with dynamics.
