amick wrote:The Rum Diary was pretty good. The trailer (which I saw before I went to the cinema) gave it this slapstick comedy feel. Which it certainly was not, a very interesting movie with some funny bits but Depp's performance was A-1. I'd probably wait for a torrent though, wasn't worth the big screen experience...
Ahh, my big screen experience was great. Mainly because I was at the Aubin.

Pointless remake, the original is just perfect the way it is.

[Pedantic fucker]The 1982 version you're referring to is in itself a remake[/pedantic fucker]

50s bloke-in-a-costume horror film, good craic if you've never seen it before.

Depp). I liked this movie - it had a few laugh out loud moments.
i'm actually nervous about watching Rum Diary as I'm such a massive fan of the book

Rum Diary the movie? WTF

I think the images I created for myself from the book can`t be recreated.
It`ll ruin it for me.

This, but then again I thought that about Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas.

Fear and Loathing had scope for wackyness, Rum Diary was a far more serious introspective movie to me.

Hmmm... I don't get this way about books - I can still remember my imagination even after seeing
film adaptations. I remember quite clearly the images I had when I read LOTR and the movies didn't
really do much to distort those images.

Sorry I can't help - all I would say is - Go, leave all your pre-conceptions at the door, and enjoy it
as a movie experience. Films are never as good as books because they close the interpretations
that you had off. However, one must remember films are collaborative experiences and as such may
offer you NEW insights and avenues. Depp & co. Will have studied this book inside out before filming.

It's not a shit film. It's actually a pretty good film.

I think the fact that it's Depp is what is swaying me.

With all the talk of remakes/originals on the last page I thought i'd mention one original I saw recently - Scarface
Image
See, i'd known about this film for a while but never knew that it was actually the same story as the 1983 classic that we all know and love. OK, so it's not exactly the same - it's not coke it's booze, he's not a Cuban immigrant he's an Italian and his love interest doesn't even wait till 'Scarface' kills her current boyfriend before she decides to move on. (Oh, and she's fitter than Michelle Pfeiffer.)
Apart from that it's pretty much the same. Good film but kinda sucks a bit of life out of the Pacino version.

Didn't realise there was an earlier version... I'll give this a look.

Also, whilst we're on the Scarface influences... Throne of Blood is worth a watch for those that haven't. Kurosawa's version of Macbeth set in feudal Japan... the climactic scene is clearly what Pacino's death in Scarface was based on (only with arrows instead of bullets).

Haven't seen that ^ in a while. Never linked the end scene to Scarface - will have to re-watch it.

One of my friends recently showed me the trailer for the movie BLOW, I've heard a lot about this movie but this is the first trailer Ive seen. The movie looks excellent (considering the topic), is it worth my time?
Good Vibes.

Predictable but still a good laugh, couple of decent jokes in there aimed at the adult audience

Image

Cage does Grindhouse, worth a watch for something mindless. Does co-star the legend that is William Fichtner :Q:

Image

Basically the exact same film, except in Bangkok. And with a monkey instead of Heather Graham. Avoid.
