Distortion VST's / Distortion Techniques.

Currently designing my basses entirely inside of massive. I know I'm a complete noob, but I was wondering if you guys would recommend any vsts to check out? I've been looking for a good bitcrusher but haven't found anything quite perfect yet.

Ohmicide is a good multiband distortion, sausage fattener fattens things up (duh), and Ephonic lofi is a good bitcrusher, mostly just play around with settings till shit sounds good

Waveshapers are really good for distortion, my favorite method of distortion actually. Any bitcrusher will do. Just download the CMT Bitcrusher, it will get the job done.

iv spent a lot of time using different distortions but lately its all saturation for me, mainly increasing the "input" amount a lot.
also my favourite thing of recent is clipping in the red (mainly for basses, i seem to get more impact doing this without sounding fuzzy/messy like other distortion techniques)
then yeah i obviously bounce and lower the volume again
its only worth doing this if you know what your doing and definitely EQ out the bad frequencies after!
whats mostly important is your volume levels & if the sound sounds good
experiment and see what works for you

any logic users i recommend putting mid range basses thru the bass amp emulator,
can get some serious low growly basses that way

another thing would be to reamp the bass, if you have a nice guitar amp then buy a reamping box and a decent mic and send your bass thru the guitar amp.
experimenting this technique at the moment

also camel phat 3 does pretty much what it says on the tin

OR in FM8 you can use the effects vst and put things through the cabinet emulator I find that works really well for dubstep/dnb wobble type basses. Makes it really heavy.

nah that's smart-- digital distortion isn't always bad, and clipping your a/d convertors is a common mastering technique. it gives a particular edge to sounds,which can be really awful or really energetic.

there's a lot of neutral plugs (logic's gain is one) that you can clip on the way in, via the output of another plugin, and then lower the output.
