Tips on making jungle?

Post by Dystinkt » Sun Dec 11, 2011 2:41 pm

Has anybody got any good advice for making jungle tracks, like good sources for breaks/ structure/ etc?

Step one: Join Dogs on Acid.

Step two: Become an elitist d-bag who spends more time worrying about what constitutes "true" jungle/DnB than producing it. :W:

But seriously...I'd get my break chopping skills in order first if you want to make some jungle. There has got to be a million youtube videos. And also seriously Dogs on Acid is a great resource. Check out their board "the Grid". There are all kinds of threads about breakbeat sources on there. I'd just use 808 samples for your basses, unless you are going reese bass. Structure wise it's pretty similar to dubstep. intro, first drop, ambient bit, second drop, outro. I'd spend some time listening to some old tunes too. You are going to want that gritty, durty durty feel to...everything. Also, obligatory rasta vocal samples! :Q:

For this drum beat i just loaded an amen break into recycle chopped it up and loaded it into dr rex in reason. then i just mangled up the break making it into 4 bar loop, copy and pasting it and then changed the last bar of the 8 bars for some variety. this hasn't taken long either and im sure you can do much better :)
Soundcloud
Its just about sticking to an initial pattern and then fucking it up every few bars i think.

In fairness I could say much the same about half the people on DSF. Guess it is going to be the same in any scene but I really don't have any time for it.

Thanks people, some really useful tips! I'd got about as far as chopping up some breaks and adding the rasta vocals on my own :) I'd probably get flamed off DOA seeing as I wasn't even born when Jungle was in its prime.

@ B-Frank: True speak for sure.

@Cheeky: I only ever lurk DOA, but there are some really great threads there. There is a lot to be learned. As I said, I'd start with your break chopping skills. What you know about bass design from dubstep will get you started, but tight, gritty breaks are a must for that Jungle sound. I like doing this right on the time line in Reaper then layering my own kicks and main snares over top. Just chop and line stuff up until it sounds right. In my experience the real secret is putting in the time to get it sounding crisp and groovy. If you are going for that funky, but feels like it's just about to fall a part feel for you drums old, dirty sampled breaks are a must. If you are going for more of a tech-step feel you can just program your drums and do the usual velocity and pitch variations and nudging things around on the grid.

rather than chopping your breaks you can load them into a sampler with different notes having different start times and one note of silence. set to monophonic so you can start/stop whenever you like basically but keeping the break's original groove intact.

you gotta be precise with the pitching then though.
